Tanks and the Squad Leader

Post by Spartan0189 »

Well, we all know that most servers require a Squads named after assets. So, lets say your playing Basrah, Your using the Challenger II. Now, here is the question:
Where does the Squad Leader sit?

Driver
Gunner
or
Heavy Machine Gun (Commander Seat)

In my honest opinion, I believe he should sit in the Commanders Seat, But, what if your squad is 2 people? Where should he sit then?

In that situation, where should he sit then? I believe he should go sit in the Main Gun..

But, the good things about being in the Commander Seat is, you can place markers for your gunner/driver to hit/drive to. The Commander Seat seems to be used as an Anti-everything asset..

So, where do you think you the SL should sit if they have a Armor Squad of Three people?

Always the driver, has the zoom and 360 degree vision.

This way he can place attack markers that will be 100% relevant to the gunner.

50cal is for self defence and rear guard more than anything and therefore not a SL thing to do unless there is CAS on the map.

In a squad of 2 people on a map with enemy air assets, driver switching between 50cal and driver position as needed is effective (50cal allows you to hear the enemy stuff)

Depends. Open maps call for being a driver, as it has the best view of the battlefield, yet urban areas are completely different thing. Whole point is NOT to drive inside, tanks are too precious to waste them on some half-arsed "ambush".

If tanks get integrated the CROWS, then that position has to be SL, as it would probably have IC and zoom, which is Godsend for such position.

Hm, Driver seems pretty ideal... For some reason, The Challenger has the slowest rotation, and usually don't prefer it, but whatever.

I guess the Driver has some pros and cons, but if it works, its cool ;)

Thanks guys

Yeah Armour squad leaders should always be in the driver position.

They can control the tactical movement and positioning of their vehicle whilst influencing that of other vehicles.

He has the high zoom scan ability and can place markers for attack.

Have to add a point, even if thread is a bit old.

The SL must be the driver in the two man squad because the gunner cannot ever ever leave his gun. The SL should be able to exit the vehicle to check and place markers outside of tank view. Placing markers for difficult terrain movements is also good. Besides, look at the division of labor within a two man tank unit.

Gunner is alert to killing all threats, this is the number one purpose of the tank and a fulltime job.

Driver is alert to the surroundings, chooses where to place the tank and when to bug out with it. It's natural for him to keep track of everything as all he can do is look around, specially when stationary. He's got the time to plan the next move and read the battleflows. He can place attack markers for fire control, making the gun employ two pairs of eyes instead of just one. He's got the time to talk to the CO or other squads.
People without imagination, consideration and plain lacking any *ation makes me question Gods Great plan. ;)
