[AAR] Korengal Firefight

Post by TomDackery »

On the Dallas INS/AAS .874 server, Korengal Valley.
I was leading my squad up the far western part of the map to reach a mountain so I could do some recon of the area, and try to figure out a cache location. On the way there, a new cache location was uncovered, and would soon lead to the most epic fire fight of my PR life... The insurgents had blocked the road by knocking down the rocks, so we grappled onto the ledge that is right above the road, and proceeded toward the cache location that was deep behind the mountain range.

As soon as we started climbing the mountain to get a good view, we started taking potshots, at first. I set a rally in a depression so it was covered, and ordered my AR to take up a position to overwatch. As soon as he opened up a few rounds, all hell broke loose. Constant RPGs, AK fire, and PKMs rained down on us as we, a single squad, tried to hold our ground. Amidst the suppression, I was able to spot where the RPG was coming from, it was the small hut about 200m away, with a PKM lying right next to it. Seeing as my Grenadier was KIA, I ordered my squad to put suppressing fire on it. ]DR[ whattheh3ll took the initiative to sprint up to the closest compound. Sadly, I didn't notice his absence until he said over VOIP "Cache on me".

At this point, we realized there were 2 caches, and we were still pinned in one position. I ordered a fall back to regroup, set a new Rally Point, and think about our next plan of action. My plan was to smoke out the road, make it to the compound, set a base of fire, and have the infantry move in to take the hut. The smoke covered our movement well enough that we didn't take any fire in the open ground on the way to the former cache compound. In fact, there wasn't any shooting going on at all, it was all just really too quiet. I was the first to arrive at the hut, and immediately sprinted off to the side, as I noticed a PKM guarding the door and an RPG loading up ammo. I ran behind the hut as the rest of my squad came up, still 50m behind. I turned around to find the RPG following me, so I put a 3rnd burst into him, saving my soul from another perishing experience. My squad member arrived in time to find the hut empty, and he promptly destroyed the cache (and himself, since he never ran away). The PKM was found on the other side of the hut, dead.

So, my squad of 6 men singlehandedly took out 2 caches, with minor losses (most of which were dealt with by the medic). At the end, I don't think a single one of us had more than 3 mags of ammo left. After pulling out, we discovered that ANOTHER cache had spawned behind the mountain range, but we were already to the river by then.

also, props to cyprezzz, even though he was in a different squad, he helped a lot, like dealing with the cave cache we stumbled into.

If I find a map of Korengal, I'll do some paint to give you a visual.

Tom, you also forgot the mention when we started taking sniper fire while running away. Me and Gimp charged up the hill and we put a single round into his forehead and I took the sniper kit. Later we used the sniper kit it provided excellent support I killed 5 enemy Tailban (after the photo) before I went down. I also grabbed a AK-47 off a dead Tailban and they sent me into the cave first Since I was somewhat a Tailban. Then we killed two more Tailban and then finally found the cashe floating on top of the ground.

It must have been good to take out two catches and well done on that I wish I had a squad when I played maps like that and that they would listen and well done.

:D I remember that. I heard a pop from a Taliban sniper, just outside the map to the north, maybe 75m away from our rally point. First question I asked was "Was that a sniper???" I ran up next to the sniper, just as he was shot. I cycled his kit until I realized I was out of bounds, and continued down the road out.

From earlier in the round: I had spotted an RPG from main, so as my squad was joining in, we started moving out south of base. We got 150m from main, at the base of the hill, and came into contact with an enemy squad, close quarters. We took heavy losses during that small fight. A new player joined, and grabbed a humvee, so Smitty spawned at base with him. I pulled the remaining 3 squadies back and we followed the road up to a place where ]DR[ whattheh3ll could rope us up. Our roping position was impeccable, as we heard a heavy gunfight going on to our west, with the cache to the east. We ignored the fight, and continued toward the cache. Once upon the top, I spotted the assumed cache location, with an RPG team walking straight out of it. They didn't notice us, so I ordered a hold fire, and let them pass. We took the cache with no casualties, until after the cache was destroyed. The RPG team had found our Rally, and came back with avengance. In fact, a few Taliban came out of hiding. We managed to kill the RPG team, but were overwhelmed by the sheer force.

We respawned on a firebase in the deep western region of the map, and continued our plight until we stumbled on a cave entrance. It enticed us, with its misty opening and giant gaping manhole. So, we entered. We explored the cave with cyprezzz, and Smitty (the little devil he is), killed and took a Taliban officer kit. This, of course, meant he was going to take lead in the cave from then on. We went down a few layers in the cave, found nothing, went up a few layers, nothing, then a miracle happened. A lone Taliban soldier fired at us from an opening in the ceiling we hadn't noticed. He was dispatched with quickly, and a rope was tossed immediately. Smitty, being the cannon fodder he is, went first. We experienced no resistance until we reached the cache... precariously situated on a wall (see Photo 3). cyprezzz incendiary'd it, and we began our descent to leave the cave. I had dropped down one level, when at least 3 Taliban opened up on me from down the cave. I was KIA on the spot. Fire from above killed two of them, while the third ran back to get his villanous friends from down the cave. They returned shortly, and engaged in a firefight directly over my body, Talibanese firing up, and my squaddy's firing down. The Taliban didn't seem to let up, and again, my squad ended up completely wiped out.

We again spawned on the Western Forward Operations Base, and proceeded North, instantly taking contact not even 20m from the spawn. It was light contact, dispatched of quickly with some M16 bursts, and no friendly casualties. We crossed the river, and continued our crusade northwards. (Almost to the Original AAR, don't worry) Smitty, being the resourceful player he is, somehow found ANOTHER AK47 officer kit. whattheh3ll, with his classic Tree grappling power, created Tree Man.

We encountered another cave, and remembering the demise of the squad in the previous raid, made an Executive decision. So, we sent in Smitty, on his own, while we kept watch outside. When the cave turned out clear, I ordered a continued movement North, so I could take up an overwatch position to ascertain the next cache position... (crazy loop where we head back to the Original AAR) (dun dun duuuun)

@Click: if you ever see me in-game, join my squad if I'm running one. I'd be more than happy :)
