According to information gleaned from public release videos, the statement in this thread is not true. The commander will not be able to fight on the battlefield, rather, he will only have a large top-down view of the battlefield, and will participate vicariously through supply drops, and "UAVs", among other things. What you folks might be thinking of is the 'squad leaders', which act as leaders of the new squad system introduced in BF2. The squad leaders will act just like any other soldier on the battlefield; however, they will be able to issue orders to people who have chosen to join with this squad leader in their squad.

Hopefully this clears things up a bit. Check out the videos featured at TotalBF2.com and around here at the Project Reality Forums for more information.

Like 1/4 of the way down.

(Community) will the commander be on the battlefield himself or will he be sitting in some building?

(@Adger) the commander is not moving around the battlefield as a player like everybody else. his equipment is present though and can be destroyed thus rendering him incapable of using the respective features. if you'd destroy his artillery for instance, the commander would not be able to fire artillery strikes.

I hope this ends the argument.

There is no argument. I believe there has just been a misunderstanding, that's all. Hopefully what I said earlier set everything straight, but if not, what you said shut the door on it.

This is incorrect. The commander is not a player on the field. The commander is only a top-down view of the battlefield.

The squad leader, on the other hand, is a player on the battlefield who can form a squad and get other players to join it. The squad leader can then issue certain commands for members of his squad to follow via smoke grenades and waypoints on other players' HUDs.

Commanders must "apply" for the position in-game, and, when elected, these players do actively participate in the battle, and can be killed, however the commander has a base where he can avoid being killed.Commanders have four primary abilities: satellite scan, artillery strikes, Predator UAV recon, and supply drops.
This was on the TotalBf2 site. So are they wrong then?

these players do actively participate in the battle
This does not mean that they run around on the battlefield shooting at people. There is no evidence as of yet that the commander is anything other than an invisible camera which floats around the battlefield.

It would be rather premature to assume that the commander is anything other than this; at this stage, anything could change for the final versions. Perhaps the commander will remain as a top down camera only, and the only way to kill them is to destroy the commander's "control bunker". Perhaps the commander will end up being a full fledged soldier. Perhaps the commander will simply only be a floating camera, and nothing more. This all remains to be seen.

Again, however, the most probable case is that the commander will simply stay as a camera, but be destroyable by means of destroying his assets on the field, and his command bunker:
the commander is not moving around the battlefield as a player like everybody else. his equipment is present though and can be destroyed thus rendering him incapable of using the respective features. if you'd destroy his artillery for instance, the commander would not be able to fire artillery strikes.

Well, this may be a matter of opinion, but i don't call floating around the map being invisible actively participating in battle.

If you're floating around blowing things up and "tattling" on the enemy, I'd say thats a pretty active role.
