Dragon Fly Unplayable

Post by BabylonCome »

I was under the impression that the major issues with lag on maps was sorted with the last patch...?

Tried playing Dragon Fly tonight and it is basically unplayable and a total server killer....

We (RIP) will be taking this map off our rotation now as just about everybody cannot play it due to the horrible lag being caused on it. Even people like myself with NASA cast-off PC's who can play Arma 2 on full spec cannot play this map due to the lag......

Shame, it's a good map too.......

Definite shame, however it is clear that the lag issues go beyond simply altering the view distance settings etc and therefore it was unlikely to be fixed in this patch.

The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end... "

When being driven by fuzzhead about 400m down the main road, the map lagged so badly on my system (essentially locked up) that punkbuster stopped responding and then kicked me. My problems are caused by stuttering aka lack of RAM which is very odd when I'm running on terrain/textures low and have 2 gig of ddr2.

The map is excellent, but I don't know why the map lags so much for me, particulary with the view distance reduction.

I'm having the same problem as .909, I can't even hit the "assign squad" button. I'm running on 4gb of ddr2 ram, quad core cpu, and nvidia 8800gt factory overclocked.....what gives?!?!?!

I wouldnt say the lag is the biggest issue with this map. It's the same memory error which crashes BF2 and totally killing the server running this map.

I was so happy to see this map getting some fixes in the changelog but it will be removed from our rotation again. Such a shame, I have played it less than 10 times

I was crashing while loading this map until I bumped up pagefile to reflect my ram upgrade and set textures to Low, ran silky smooth otherwise

I like how they release maps laggy as hell and they "Fix" it by reducing the view distance.

Too many statics. It's like over-revving and old engine. Put too much shit on it and it will stutter like porky pig

oh thank god you arrived, just PM me your fix and I'm sure it'll get integrated in to the next patch.

I have no FPS problems in .9

reducing view distance is quick and easy, unlike redoing all the lower level of detail models, reducing VD will help people until more optimisations can be made.

here is your refund

We push the envelope with every release, and we take all data on board, but lets speak with more respect that is due for all the work that was put in.

I couldn't play Dragon Fly in .909 but with the patch it's running very smooth for me.

Actually, as oddly as it seems, I really am thankful for the PR DEVSs to push the limit of the engine, to produce a better looking game. FPS will sacrifice though, but as history has shown, we learn from our mistakes, and find a way to alleviate all the Bugs and Issues that need to be dealt with.

I understand your anger towards people flat out ditching on the DEV's - I feel it as well. The point to be made here however is there is a fundamental flaw with the way the map works. Too many buildings!!!

Pushing the engine is one thing, but you have to remember it simply isn't made to go to endless limits. If I chucked a billion trees on a map and didn't think about performance, that would be just plain irresponsible. Sure it would look good, sure it would be 'pushing the limits' but there is only so much you can do with a game made to run on a single CPU and utilize a limited amount of hardware.

It is a big shame to see a map with so much potential be only by enjoyed by a few. Of course, the time constraints of making a reliable fix for the map come into play, it would have to be re-lightmapped etc.
For now we will just have to do without and hope to get Dragonfly playable by the majority in the next version.

the anger mostly caused by statements, like in the above quote

while the problem is not that simple
for me the whole map is fine on all high, but on north side on cornfields it stutters as hell, and on the same spot some others are fine but lag in buildings, like you, etc.

dont get me wrong- investigations and reports of issues are very welcome, but they should be done in informative way

but dont expect anything constructive for this^^

Sorry this was just from when making one of my maps, using loads of apartment buildings led to similar problems that many experience on Dragonfly now. It could in fact be a number of things but that is the main thing I would put it down to (Though I definitely wouldn't call myself a mapping pro yet). It could turn out to be something different altogether, I apologize for jumping to conclusions though, certainly no offense intended.

Also, in case it's any help, I have gotten quite a large performance boost with the map in 0.91, however the memory crashes still happen. And in case it sounded like I didn't like the map, I think it is an awesome map, just would be so much better when more people can play it.
