Squad 5 performs a succesful combat drop on the 2nd pier -
The docks were quickly taken by the us forces as they advanced inland. a small recce unit was previously dropped behind enemy lines in the north city district, however the force was too small to secure the area. Squad 5 was tasked to reinforce them.
we advanced from the shipping containers along the edge of the docks towards the southern gate. I was on point. Ten meters the gate a huey exploded over head and we all turned to look. The sound of a massive engine approached, i turned back in time to see an old soviet BRDM come barreling around the corner. time slowed for the split second i was sure at least the driver, gunner, or possible both would have seen us in the open. i screamed as loud as i could as i turned away. "EVERYBODY IN THE WATER!"
At the moment we were only 2 meters at most from the edge of the dock, but it may as well have been a mile. On a full sprint i hopped over the mooring lines and into the water. The squad leader having heard my signal repeated it over and over in that one second. A series of splashes sounded off, "1, 2, 3, ..., 6." everyone made it in. We all swam immediately as far under the dock as possible and hunkered down waiting for the BRDM to roll down the ramp to look for us. Yet as we waited for it to approach, the roaring engine faded away. It did not see us...
In that moment i was sure that every member of the squad made a sigh of relief. relief that I had yelled out quikly, relief that we were so close to the water's edge, and relief that despite being in the open, the armored vehicle did not see us.
After a few more seconds to calm down, we advanced on the beach edge to the the ramps where small paddle boats would have been lowered into the water. however as we were about to enter the capture zone of the Northern City District, we received intel from command of infantry just behind us on the dock we jumped off of just a minute ago. We high tailed it back across the beach and through the water. as we approached sure enough at least two squads were crossing the open. we promptly set up our AR and readied ourselves for a slaughtering.
on the squad leaders command we opened fire. as effective as this ambush was, we were almost immediately responded to by the survivors and some others who had yet to cross. there was nowhere behind us to run and certainly the only option was forward as they began to advance on us. we attempted to fall back towards the shipping containers but under heavy fire that was impossible. After managing to pick off a few more we decided to advance into the warehouse across from us right next to the enemy. However as our luck was previously used up in that lucky leap into the depths, we were met with a situation that may as well have been execution by firing squad. Two full squads and that BRDM we dodged before...
