[AAR] MANPADS; they're not completely useless

Alright, so heres run down. We're taking North-west Objective, and our squad gets killed by a tank. Dispo asks us to spawn on his rally, but I ask to spawn on the FOB to grab an AA Kit since the Tornado was flying low a lot around us after doing strafes. I believe he was just engaged by our Su-33 and shook him off his tail. He passed by me, I armed my Strela-2, track, locked, and fired. He never popped flares(he might have been out or didn't react fast enough) and the missile tracked perfectly and shot him down. I then proceeded to giggle and cheer like a little school girl cause I just shot down a jet with a MANPADS.

Anyone else have any luck with the AA Kits?

Haven't really tried since the update, but I find it a lot more challenging now. In previous versions, I had no trouble bringing down enemy air units.

I'll get the hang of it eventually of course.

One of the big reasons it's more difficult to use now is because you can't see what it is targeting. Just try to keep the reticle/sight on the target and track it. You'll hear the second tone and fire IMMEDIATELY after you hear the tone, if you don't it'll give the target a chance to flare and make your job much more difficult.

Remember, AA explodes if it goes near a target, friendly or enemy, locked or not ;)

I've never had too much trouble with manpads. I just fire as soon as I have lock. I've found firing at an angle perpendicular to them doesn't work particularly well, and trying to fire over about 400m is pointlessly ambitious, at that distance the flares mean it explodes far enough away from them to limp back to base. Also if they're close enough, maybe 50 to 100, you can fire without lock and the airburst will blow them out the sky.

One thing I am curious about. Does leading the target when it's locked improve the chance of a hit? I was thinking that perhaps it would mean when the missile gets close it wouldn't have to do such a sharp turn to hit the heli, and that you would also be firing at a slightly more direct angle.

Jaymz and I were running a logistics squad on Burning Sands as the British. We were transporting supplies to the northwestern sector of the city, near the outskirts. Suddenly we saw an enemy Officer looking through his GLTD at our British FOB flag, which was in play at that point. For some time, the enemy Havoc had been on a free-reign and was obliterating anything and everything roaming around the desert.

We pulled our logistics truck up next to the enemy Officer, (it's dead silent by the way) hopped out, and knifed him. As we were making our way back to our truck, it suddenly exploded in front of us. The Havoc had caught sight of us and blew our truck to smithereens with a Hellfire.

We dive into what little cover we have, trying to get out of its' line-of-sight. I notice another enemy soldier running past at this time with what looks to be a H-AT kit. I give chase as he rounds a corner and tries to hide. I unload my magazine into his back and use his body as concealment. I pickup his kit and discover that it's actually an enemy AA kit. I peek out from cover for a moment, and sure enough, the Havoc is still hovering around, searching for us.

I decide to take a gamble and pickup the MANPAD off the corpse. I need to time this perfectly. As the launcher is arming, I sprint out of cover. Just then, as if the Havoc had caught wind of my dastardly plan, it begins evasive maneuvers. I bring up the sights and curse under my breath, hoping I'll be able to gain a lock in time. The Havoc is getting smaller and smaller at an alarming rate; it's nearly out of sight now.

*BZZZZZTTT*

I've got a solid tone.

*WHOOOSH*

Missile away.

As the warhead screams its way skyward, the Havoc tries in vain to dodge it, popping flares like a mad-man. It's too late. The missile detonates near the helicopter's tail rotor and shreds the fuselage. The engine is billowing smoke and its rotors begin to fail. There's nothing the crew can do but pray the helicopter auto-rotates safely to the ground. No such luck; it explodes on impact.

Just then, my screen starts to fade to black. Shit, where did I drop my kit?! I stumble around in the darkness for a bit before I manage to bump into my rucksack. I let out a sigh of relief as I quickly pick up my rifle and continue on.

I was bored...

Dude....on Muttrah a week ago the AA kit became my favorate thing ever. My team was getting destroyed by a relatively good Cobra who was doing dives. So I got an AA kit, hid around some building with a freind for ammo and I saw the Cobra flying low, aimed, shot and the basterd got shot and started going down with everyone around me shooting at it lol.
