[AAR] The Daring Marine Pilots of Muttrah City
Map: Muttrah City
Team: USMC
So, myself, 2LT Fighter, Summerstyle, UDA Marksman, and a few others were all flying the Hueys on Muttrah City.
We were conducting re-supply and transporation missions to the Marines in the forward battle area.
Enemy Anti-Air defenses were light, and we took few losses initially.
However, the MEC mortar positions at the Fortress were causing problems for the Marines advancing into the city.
Our AAVs and infantry were unable to penetrate their forward battle line and reach the fortress to destroy the mortars, and our Cobra was down and unable to conduct a surgical strike on the enemy Firebase.
Dsiplaying impressive ingenuity under the constraints of what equipment we had, Fighter had an idea. We would conduct a deniable-operation, which would involve the insertion of a special forces team onto the highway behind the Fortress, where they would then make their way down the valley, disable the mortars, and be extracted.
Our Hueys were loaded up, and we took off from the carrier, with three of the four Hueys providing interference and serving as decoys against the strong MEC AA defenses around fortress.
We came in at 100 meters, just above the ocean.
Fighter inserted his team onto the road successfully, and we returned to the carrier.
Shortly thereafter, the position of our team became compromised. MEC forces must have heard our choppers coming in, because they were ready for the Marines on the ground.
The team came under heavy small-arms fire, and pulled back further East.
Sacraficing themselves, two of the team members engaged the MEC troops and bought time for their third comrade (whose name escapes me) to get back to the Hueys.
Fighter and I came in, and we managed to extract him.
Now we were in a bad position.
We couldn't take out the mortars from the ground using conventional assets, and we couldn't insert another special forces team.
So we decided to do it the old-fashioned way, Vietnam-style.
Summerstyle, UDAMarksman, and myself all loaded into Fighter's Huey.
Our mission was to neutralize the MEC mortars from the air, without putting any boots on the ground.
It was a risky mission, and we all knew it, but it had to be done.
Displaying exceptional piloting skills, Fighter flew the gauntlet past the hostile SAM net, and brought us up to the North side of the Fortress.
As I looked inside, I spotted several MEC infantry hastily preparing their mortars for another barrage.
The Marines had only a tenuous grip on the West City, and another mortar attack might break their lines.
We could not allow those mortars to fire.
Small-arms fire began to hit the helicopter, but we stayed firm, and Fighter managed to bring the Huey to a stable hover.
I was shot in the chest while setting up my weapon, but we stayed on target.
I brought my AT4 up to my shoulder, aimed at the mortar position, and fired:
It was a direct hit, and killed one of the MEC soldiers manning the mortars.
I yelled at Fighter to take us away, and the Huey roared off to the North, while small-arms fire and Stinger missiles zoomed past the windows.
We returned to the carrier safley, satisfied with the good work we had done in eliminating that threat to the Marines.
We didn't have all the assets we needed, and we lost many good men taking out those mortars.
But, like true Marines, were were resourceful, and we got the job done.
Mission Accomplished:

That seemed awesome!
Gotta try it sometime!
(P.S. How long did they take to rebuild the mortars? XD)

Souds like a superb mission, and Definitely helped the team out! Cheers to you lads! .
I think one hely could of had 2 saw gunners on a side surpressing enemy units on the ground, acting like a gunship, while the other could do what you did, take out enemy FOB emplacement with a LAT/HAT.

Sounds a tad exaggerated lol
I have dropped people onto fortress tower, taken out the FOB within and secured it against reinforcements, would of seemed like a great idea for you at the start
you would of been screwed if the MEC used the real AA guns in their main and outside fortress, would of been better than all those 'stingers'

Not exagerated actually, I just wrote it in a more formal military-style to enhance the story.Shepard wrote:Sounds a tad exaggerated lol

Actually, they did have an AA and TOW position on one of the North towers later on, which I destroyed with the AT4. But right after I did, Fighter's Huey was hit by a missile point blank, and he rammed the doomed chopper into the TOW, killing us all.
Sadly, I don't have a picture of that. Maybe Fighter does.
Well, I killed one of the guys manning it, so probably a little while. But the game ended shortly thereafter, so it didn't really matter.goguapsy wrote:That seemed awesome!

Awesome! Sounds a bit like that Gulag mission from MW2, but with a middle eastern setting instead

Indeed, it was very similar.[R-CON]Adriaan wrote:Awesome! Sounds a bit like that Gulag mission from MW2, but with a middle eastern setting instead
Especially when the Hueys were going in (we brought a few to provide flares and cover our approach) and all the gunfire was going around us.
Although we didn't actually land in the Fortress, since that was against server rules. Still, you can do a lot of damage from the air if you have an AT4 like we did.

Those 2 marines who stayed behind to buy the rest of the squad time should be given the Medal of Honor. *Salute*

Cool story bro.
Nice, too bad the MEC guys were incompetent. Even the mortar guys could have hit you had they known how to use their weapons. Even a LAT guy could have hit you. I guess that you deserve the congratulations, but don't exaggerate the story too much as it becomes not credible.

Re: [AAR] The Daring Marine Pilots of Muttrah City
The first thing that came to mind when I read that was a declassified 160th SOAR mission I'd read about where in 1991, a 160th blackhawk called "Lady Godiva" dropped a 3 man "Strat Recon" Team off behind enemy lines in Iraq at night to look for Iraqi armor movement that might pose a threat to invading coalition forces. Two days later, while performing maintenance on the BH, the team got a call to go rescue the recon team they inserted was compromised and calling for extraction. A little girl had wandered up to their camouflaged hide site and ran to sound the alarm. Dozens of Iraqi militia soon were upon them.Sidewinder Zulu wrote: Shortly thereafter, the position of our team became compromised. The team came under heavy small-arms fire, and pulled back further East.
160th Black Hawks normally operate in pairs, but the other BH caught fire before takeoff, so the "Lady Godiva" and her crew were off into the desert during daylight with no support. The pilots gunned it as fast as they could, while F-16s dropped ordinance on the growing number of Iraqi militia and mechanized troops coming into the area.
An F-16 pilot relayed info to the BH Pilots as they headed to the compromised team's position at over 140 knots.
"Chalk one, I am out of ammo and running low on fuel. You need to be here now."
The pilots pushed their vehicle to the breaking point, following a series of waypoints to avoid detection by Iraqi radar and AA. Ten minutes later, the F-16 pilot said, in almost a whisper, "Chalk one... if you can't be here in ten minutes, don't bother showing up."
The BH pilot and copilot looked at each other, and simultaneously said "F*** the waypoints," banking into their final stretch towards the team's position. In doing so, they passed just a few meters directly over an unsuspecting Iraqi armored Battalion, and just a hair under a set of high tension wires.
They finally spotted the team after they popped a signal flare, and the three man recon team hauled *** to the black hawk as rounds continued to kick dirt around them. Rounds started tearing into the windows, rotor blades, and thin hull of the Black Hawk.
With miniguns and personal weapons firing away, the Blackhawk pitched forward and pulled away from the nightmare as rounds continued pinging off the hull.

Awesome AAR, Sidewinder. Nice of you to give us some pictures aswell, which made us see how well those mortars were hidden, and hard to take out with both infantry and close air support.
You guys did a great job!

But it wouldn't have been possible without Fighetr's good flying and the cover provided by the other Hueys as we hovered above the Fortress.
We probably lost about six choppers that day, but it was fun.
