Hi, I have the the exact same issue as in this Steam support thread:
Arma 2 Crash to Desktop but game is still running [Archive] - Steam Users' Forums
It says there to flush vram when it happens, but I have no clue when that is, sometimes its after hours or after minutes of playing and it happens too fast for me to react and I usually kill the game in task manager when it does.
This did not happen before my upgrade this December, here's my current specs:

I was wondering if anybody else playing ArmA or PR on ArmA had/has this or if there are any other preventive solutions to this.

flush vram in game (done by pressing "Left Shift" + "-" on the numberpad and typing "flush" then Enter)
People get very good at touch typing the word "flush" since you can't actually see what you're typing.
You're pressing your luck with the 512MB video card, Arma2 tends to leak VRAM , once it reaches 513Mb you're screen is going back. In general while playing, AND THIS IS BEFORE THE 1.6 patch, it gets to 1.5Gb in 30 minutes, 1.6 patch was supposed to fix this, but it still occurs,

Meeh I play with 512Mb card...gts450 though.
Only time when my game crashed is when I pushed video/audio settings too high.
Hint?

When this happens again: "Alt" + "Return" will set ArmA2 to windowed mode, "Alt" + "Return" the second time will restore it to fullscreen this can be a workaround at times.
What actually might happen is that some background program (Virus, Anti-Virus program, etc.) takes over focus and thus sends ArmA2 out of focus ("blur"). Try disabling unneeded programs and set your AV to gaming mode. Use "Process Explorer" or "Task Manager" to identify possible culprits.
