Setting up Joystick in BF2 and Arma2

Post by MaSSive »

So I got a cheap joystick, and I never used one in my entire life. Its a Genius F23 Maxfighter or something, isnt much but for testing is okay. I got it bulk, means no boxes, install CD's or manuals.

Genius Europe GmbH

Ive tried setting it up in BF2, and ended up resetting controls to defaults, cause I just couldn't figure out what to use for throttle up/down, pitch fwd/back. :? ??:

Tried to set it up in Arma2 and that didnt endup well also.

Tried searching for some joystick profilers applications, but found few payed ones which had presets fox xbox controllers not joysticks, so I dumped that.

If anyone could help me with this one Id appreciate it. For BF2 you can look at your controls.con file in your profile directory ( My Documents>Battlefield2>Profiles> and now those folders with Numbers 0001, 0002 etc... you can figure out which is the right one by opening Profile.con in notepad to see your nickname in it, or you can make a screenshot of your controls setting in BF2 for Aircrafts and Helicopters.

Same thing for Arma2, well almost, but the part of controls.con. Screenshots if possible, and a quick brief explanation.

Is it easier to fly in PR both jets and helis with joysticks or its just a PITA as I concluded? I currently use mouse and keyboard, well obviously...

Any application that you know off that has these profiles for joystick of this kind?

Thanks

I don't understand what you mean?

For PR:BF2 just go to the controls, remove all references to the 'FALCON' controller, then when you go to pitch settings, just push forward/pull back on the joystick when you have that one highlighted. Same goes for throttle.. click to edit that function, then just increase the throttle on your joystick and it'll use that.

Well throttle up/down is now on my kb ( W & S key ), and for pitch I used mouse or arrows on kb.

With joystick I actually dont know what to use for throttle up/down, I was thinking to use HAT switch for that while joy axis 0 ( X axis ) to be used for pitch control. That didn't work right....Ill try it again.

Yeah, take a few minutes to understand the basic terminology, will make it easier to decide on which buttons/joystick to assign which task:
Aircraft principal axes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_dyn ... g_aircraft)

Helicopter flight controls - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I say this because all the flyboys in PR and PRAA use all the flight terminology like everyone knows it.

^^ thought that too already, whether Massive knew that that black thing (which u see on the pic) was a throttle...

Hey Litorals, VEEERY nice post there above, like it very much, also those Wiki-links. U (or any moderator here) just need 2 fix the ending of 2nd link, the ")" sign must get INTO the link, atm it's not workin 100%, you get en error-site on Wiki atm. (although it is suggested the right article there then :P but pls fix it)

well... I got a little problem with my yaw-axis

Yaw-axis:

Image

on the awesome Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, the Joystick is a bit loose/slack and take offs in Jets r (are) a bit hard, since the front wheel of the jets is turning a biiiiiit to left or a biiiiiit to right (also rudder at the fin, end of jet), can't get it completely straight, ONLY if I leave the Joystick and tap "W" and "D" for yaw-axis, until I took off, then back to Joystick and make awesome maneuvres! ;) (anybody help me here? Is there a software-trick/setting to make the yaw-axis less sensitive???), so I understand, Massive, that it's not always easy at the beginning to learn how to use a Joystick effectively! ;)

Meh, I wont learn it ever...for some reason its all inverted. Cant find a way to set it correctly. Managed to take of with a jet, all good, but if I want to bank left, I bank joystick left and plane goes right...well I tried the mouse invert axis thingy and its not changing anything. So is this how its supposed to be?

Im a better pilot with mouse and kb to be frank.

If you want to invert the axis you need to assign it correctly there is no "invert"-option per se. Axes should be showing up as + and - variants indicating the direction. If you figure it is inverted try re-assigning and turning the stick the other way this time (i.e. instead of "+" you should end up with "-") .
Also you only need to assign once per axis. E.g. only assign Accelerate. Decelerate should be automatically configured to the inverse direction of the same axis.

Yeah did like that but if I configure Pitch Fwd and push stick forward it will fill both lines for fwd and back with 'Joy Axis 0'. There is no '+' or '-'. And there is no any kind of software for it, just standard configuration ( calibration ) in Windows7 CP.

JUST go to the BF2 settings menu and do the setting for it the other way round...

You need to set deadzones for your joystick. Here is what I have found:
Technogirl wrote:I just bought this product and if you set the "dead zone" to like, 10 percent or so, then you won't have the twisting problems. Just edit the axis for each of the axis things.
To some degree, you can correct for things. Using the dead zone, you can keep a neutral position when you intend to. Also, you can program each button to any key using the "assign command" function.
