UH-1C Gunship. Any luck with it? Discussion

Post by IvanSFRJ »

Hello fellow players and esteemed Devs :D
I'll first briefly introduce myself so as to not come across as a Noobie due to the single forum post :)
PR and I go back to 0.5 days, where some of the best and most cherished moments of my gaming life were having fun being a Spastic RPG gunner on Al Basrah shooting down gunships, as well as being a coordinated infantry man, also with piloting skills to greatly benefit the team. I am in no way new to PR and have watched it grow into a fine Work of art.

That being said, I hope this thread can provide constructive discussion on the effectiveness of the UH-IC Gunship as it is. It would also greatly benefit all pilots if you shared your strategies and stories of luck so that we may reflect and possible replicate.

As it currently stands, I do find the Gunship packs a considerable punch, and in the right hands has exceptional firepower and harassing capabilities.
As it stands, I have two technical questions about the helicopter that maybe someone with more experience than me or technical knowledge could answer.

1. Why does the UH-1C Huey dive so violently with respect to other Helos in PR when the nose tilted down? Is this representative of the actual helicopter being much harder to control? This makes is much harder to control the helicopter during strafing runs, reducing its effectiveness with its very small amount of FFARs'.

2. Do the mini-guns have splash damage? If so, share your experience of its effectiveness for optimal use.? Its very difficult to see what damage I do when I'm riding shotgun in a helicopter, although given the distance between the individual guns, and the inability to oscillate left and right, it looks like my bullets are elegantly landing in parallel lines metres away from each other, not doing a thing.

Thanks all, and I hope this thread turns into a hotbed for discussion. :)
Sorry for any grammatical errors in advance.
In-game name is "wow-ivan".
Ivan :)

dbobicqc some of you may know me

Why does the UH-1B/C/D Huey dive so violently :

The vietnam huey is the only helicopter in that game (mod) that have the close ish flight model to a real helicopter (i know there's engine limitation and it's not fsx)
AWESOME WORK to who ever work on it

the other huey version i love them but they are too ninja , fun to fly but nowhere close to how they really fly

A- helicopter cannot sustain a dive specially those 90 degree ,,,,, i don't know how to fly a attack helicopter Hog server style this is not a p-47,,, A-10 don't even do that .

B- "Short dive" can be made BUT : you need to reduce collective(Throttle... using bf term) a lot to avoid over speed and keep the nose higher (personally i find it to be the most useless tactic ever)
your expose too long then dive toward a target who have the best angle to shoot back at you etc,,,

C- Minigun are effective in dead close engagement but you need to swing the tail a lot and your copilot need to hold the trigger , look like the Convergence is way too far i often shoot left and right till a start swinging but they can be extremely deadly

D- Fly on the deck , your less expose , can pop out of the tree and kill everything , more expose to rpg true but at least the quad aa dont have you on sight, avoid dead stop 180 degree just keep going on the deck and bank hard and turn in the safest way can come back

E-Reduce your speed helicopter in real life don't have tail swing or minimal at full speed (ka-50/52)do not count they have a different layout. it will give you more angle of rudder if you need to shoot out of your line .

Splash damage???I dont think so.
But once you get hit, you are a dead man.

I think the miniguns have a small amount splash damage to simulate the extreme amount of bullets being fired

If it's like the guns on the BlackHawk then it does indeed have splash, it is a very small radius but you don't have to score direct hits to kill.

Personally? I come from behind often (Lol), and just burst fire the rockets. Using the "Hold right" sights (Hold the right mouse, you'll pull down your FFAR sight), and in a burst of 3, your 2nd/3rd seems to hit dead on the target. Other than that.. you don't dive. Give your M60 gunners (they ARE useful) shots too, those things suppress well, and you (if you work it right), have a near consistent suppression on the enemy (IE, fire 100 rounds, switch, second gunner fires 100 whilst 1st reloads). Come from above if you can, flying dead-on is an easy way to get shot.

You can also be cheeky and have an auto rifleman shoot along side your door gunner. Two M60's firing simultaneously can put down 1200 rounds per minute on the target.

One problem with the yhueys in game is a lack of controls e.g. speed, artificial horizon, altitude. Im not saying that the huey needs the stadard BF2 helicopther HUD but it does need somesort of way to monitor speed, artificial horizon, and altitude. It also should have some aiming refrence, since IRL huey pilots would use a grease marker to mark where thier rockets would go on the windscreen

No problem buddy, Just try your hardest to appreciate the dive. I know it's often suggested, but just practice going on la drang alt, with 2 CAS Choppers, and just strafe the little rock in the open just after US Command, it's a perfect target (Duh, it doesn't move :D ) and it's in the open so you can practice your stafes :P

PS, there is an aiming sight.. try holding right click.
