Re: A bit too much racism on the servers
The argument in this thread shows that while some will accept it as 'role-playing', a substantial portion of players find it offensive or in bad taste, and that should be a good enough reason to keep it out of public play.

I thought they would at least throw in racism related to the era such as calling the nva or vc gooks, but that reads more like a thai sex tourist on his best behaviour.

Re: A bit too much racism on the servers
What are you on? Are you saying this guy has NEVER been discriminated against? I can guarantee you that in some way, he has. It doesn't matter what color skin you have, all that matters is that you're different. People just want to make it into a race issue. Hell, there could be riots in the 60's because people that were short were being discriminated against. I'm 5' 8" and some of my friends are taller than me, and sometimes I get discriminated against. There's nothing I can do about it other than take it in stride and continue to have fun. But maybe that's just me. I don't see anything wrong with roleplaying in this game, as it's Project Reality. You think that in Vietnam guys were running around saying "Guys, how do you think the Vietnamese feel when we call them Gooks then stab them with our bayonets and shoot them? It's so unhumanitarian! We should really be more nice!" Come on, get real.Incognito84 wrote:You've obviously never been the victim of racism in your entire life. You have no idea how it feels to be discriminated against because of your skin colour or some other factor which you can not help.
You're ignorant because you only look at the racial issue. Again, get off your pedestal and realize that 99.999% of all people are discriminated against in their lives more often than you believe. It's in our DNA to do it.Incognito84 wrote: You're just like a great deal of other North Americans who have also never experienced it, the difference is that you're being vocal and expressing an opinion that makes your ignorance visible.
No, I think it's because you're a giant pussy.Incognito84 wrote: My point: a person who has genuinely experienced these sorts of things would not be saying what you're saying. The reason I'm sensitive about this is because I've experienced it a bit (I'm a 0.01% minority where I live)
Now, before you respond, actually read what I said. It makes sense. Do you think our species would be where it is today crying about discrimination in the Stone Age?

The difference is that they were all actively trying to kill each other, so the use of racial epithets was not high on anyone's list of concerns.PricelineNegotiator wrote:You think that in Vietnam guys were running around saying "Guys, how do you think the Vietnamese feel when we call them Gooks then stab them with our bayonets and shoot them? We are a bunch of morons playing a videogame. There is simply no place for that kind of behavior here.

I think the game enviroment is what we make of it, in squad.. in game. Racism is born out of ignorance and a signature of an immature person. As a youngster I heard it ad naseum all the time and rejected it.
Perhaps being exposed to different ethinic groups brings out the worst in people. Myself, I enjoy playing this game.. meeting people and realizing that my spot on the planet is not the most important.
Reject racism when you hear it. Step up!

I don't see a "race," "color," "religion," "disability status" or any other demographic box aside from age on the profile for these forums for this user or any other. And unless he's posted all of this here, complete with authenticated photographic evidence, or you're some kind of internet detective and found where he's stated all these demographics to prove his "discrimination cred," I doubt you know any of these things.Incognito84 wrote:You've obviously never been the victim of racism in your entire life. The reason I say this is because what you say comes from your ignorance more than anything. Don't take the word "ignorance" as an insult; you're just like a great deal of other North Americans who have also never experienced it, the difference is that you're being vocal and expressing an opinion that makes your ignorance visible.
My point: a person who has genuinely experienced these sorts of things would not be saying what you're saying. The reason I'm sensitive about this is because I've experienced it a bit (I'm a 0.01% minority where I live) and seen others experience it a great, great deal worse.
And even if he were a white, male North American, what the Hell other than his statement makes you think he has never experienced discrimination? Yeah, there's too much racism here alright.

You can either let slurs piss you off and get you down or you can smirk and know whoever is trying to put you down, no matter what color they are, is just showing their true colors: that of shit. And it comes in every color.
That having been said, always try to have some measure of class in public, even on the internet.

I think its more of a role-playing thing. I remember someone making a similar thread awhile ago and I said the same thing. For Russians its vodka, for Americans its hamburgers and cheating on wii fit games, British are tea bags, Islamic militants are durka durka muhammad jihad. Who the hell cares? Although 'slanty eyed" does go a bit far and sounds more malicious. But seriously like the dude in the beginning said, political correctness isn't any better. We're mostly all grown-ups here.

Those are neither races, nor examples of racism.crot wrote:For Russians its vodka, for Americans its hamburgers and cheating on wii fit games, British are tea bags...
If you wouldn't say it to someone's face, you shouldn't be saying it in PR.

I personally never saw a squad named 'nigger' or 'chink'. I saw people calling others that and got banned and rightly so. Those are examples of pure racism personally directed at others.'[508th_PIR wrote: Grey;1762600']Those are neither races, nor examples of racism.

For example, a 'vodka', 'hadji', 'durka allah', 'canucistan', 'infidels' squads are usually on maps that involve those respectful armies/militants with those stereotypes. It's just friendly teasing, it's not serious. No need to get so sensitive about that. It adds to the game flavor

Why don't we all just get along?

I have no problem with most of those (the "durka durka" thing is borderline, akin to "ching chong" or the like) as again, they aren't racist - the point of my last post.crot wrote:For example, a 'vodka', 'hadji', 'durka allah', 'canucistan', 'infidels' squads are usually on maps that involve those respectful armies/militants with those stereotypes. I don't understand how people get offended over the internet. There needs to be a course people take before using a computer to become desensitized. If people are using racist phrases they are not doing it out of spite and even if they are and you take offense to it you need to get over it. It's never going to stop, on the internet or in the real world.

This is 100% true and anyone who can't see that may not be actually thinking about it. Not being a pessimist here, but it's just how humans are constructed.'[EC wrote:DR.NOobFragger;1762682']It's never going to stop, on the internet or in the real world.

I don't get it. We're all playing a game where you shoot other people. Even drop napalm on them. But yet, you say one wrong thing and the entire world is against you... This sounds like the BF3 EA Forum Moderators. The game has the in game characters say ALOT worse ****, but then you say "Badass" on the forums and you face a ban(FROM THE GAME TOO) Come on, war is not fun, war is an ugly mess. You think no one uses racial slurs or racism in real war? Come on. I thought the PR Community can handle this petty nonsense.

Re: A bit too much racism on the servers
I find the arguments telling people to HTFU because it's human nature less than compelling.
Using this logic excuses us from any actions which fall outside social norms? We all know that doesn't happen irl - we have rules governing how we are expected to behave and when we chose to or are unable to behave within the rules set down by society we are punished.
In anycase.... Social norms are determined by each community.. fall outside them expect consequences..

Oh andAll that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
I agree war would be a horrible mess. I haven't experienced it. I also agree that a situation like war drives people to extreme actions... I certainly don't delude myself that I am experiencing it sitting comfortable behind my computer at home. Chosing a point where I believe roleplaying crosses a line stops at ruining other peoples gaming experience imo.I don't get it. We're all playing a game where you shoot other people. I suppose that's the problem, Noddy - no real consequences, and further proof of John Gabriel's G.I.F.T.

Re: A bit too much racism on the servers
If you were talking about me, I was by no means condoning racism. I was rather explaining the background behind it, rather than offering a shallow "I luv double standards" argument (last part not aimed at you). Of course there are rules which we live by in our society that make it unacceptable to practice racism, and those rules are sensible, as we are all human beings.[R-MOD]IINoddyII wrote:I find the arguments telling people to HTFU because it's human nature less than compelling.

Re: A bit too much racism on the servers
I think the problem is not really racism, but stupidity, for lack of better term. Some of the players I encounter online really seem like they suffer from brain damage or other mental conditions. Also, some of them are drunk or high.
Most of my time in PR is spent looking for a real proper squad, unfortunately not spent playing the game.
