Can somebody tell me exactly what settings to use when making a 2 km map ? The settings which pops up after you click "New map", is it size:1024 scale:2 for 2 km maps ?

I just have to say fucking awesome map to make man! The biggest and most forgotten battle since Vietnam more people were killed in this single battle then the war in Afghanistan!!! Put that into comparison.

Any way i would recommend using those apartments like out of the map Iron ridge the ones that look like this:

Which is from Grozny by the way.

I think one of the hard parts will be making the destroyed building which was essentially half of Grozny during the battle.

Any way good luck this is a really great idea for a map and somewhat essential for any half decent game covering all recent conflicts.

Thanks m8! yeah it truly was something special with this war, I think it's a worthy opponent to hell :P

Here is a picture from a testmap where i will test all the things i'm not 100% sure of. On the picture you see white spots on the rubble at the house, I used garbage_detail where the white spots are. My question is can i make it look better from a distance ? or will it always be these white spots when you look at it from a distance ? I know it gets better when moving closer to it but when i use my grass layer which is layer 1 and press set low detail and generate it always makes it look better from a distance aswell, does that only work for layer 1 ?

"Message to short"
Did you set a lowdetailtexture number to it? Also go into your "resources bar" (Farthest left) and select "General" Right about "layers" go into your tweak bar and set that values to...

Code: Select all

6
32
5/3
0
175

Should the number be 1 for every layer? and do you mean LowDetailType? Because I can't find the LowDetailTexture.

EDIT: Ok I changed the values like you said and now it works :D I guess i should set all layers lowdetailtype to 1 aswell?

If it is a rock face or rock surface set it to 2.

mini map is later, you will see it on the right side toolbar. Click reload then show. With north/south, I would just look at the terrain raw file and see where it faces (remember it is flipped over the x-axis) oh, but you wont see anything if you havent added any terrain yet

Alright, could you tell me how to do it a little bit more detailed? Where can i find the terrain raw file, what should i open it with etc.
Or is it easier to just see the minimap while in the editor?

the north side is the top side of the map. If you forgot which side this is you can render a simple editor minimap and then you can navigate yourself by using the little green dot which marks where your camera is.

this comes out ofthis tutorial.A tutorial how explains how to make nice PR minimaps, but that's something you only need to worry about in the end when the map is finished.
rhino wrote:Step 2: Basic MiniMap, for temp/preview use
Just encase you do not know how to make a basic MiniMap already I will go though how to do that now. It's normally a good idea to generate one of these for just a preview of what it will look like before you might go though a lot of work depending on your map size and its also good for just a temperate minimap used for Test builds etc and when your map is final you can replace it with your "perfect" final minimap.

to do this, with your map open in the level editor and in the Editor>General Bar on the right, if you scroll down a little you should see a little minimap bit like this.

Image

If you click on the generate button, you will probaly have to wait afew secs then will pop up a small preview in the top left corner of your main view of the minimap you have just generated.

Image

As you can see, it looks pretty **** in its current state, lots of objects missing and just a load of shadows on the ground. You can also use this for navigation as you can see, there is a little green box on the map with the location of your camera, click on a diffrent location on the MiniMap and your camera will warp strait too there. I tbh don't use it much as a navigation tool as it blocks too much of your view, need to generate a 2048x2048 image and keep it loaded which kinda defeats the point, but its up to you, there if you need it

After this MiniMap is generated, it saves it (and overwrights any previous MiniMaps you have unless backed up) to the editor folder of your map (\Battlefield 2\mods\*your mod*\levels\*your map*\Editor\minimap.dds)

Now if you want to make this into a temp minimap for WIP tests or w/e, you can open it with Photoshop and skip to Step #. Otherwise continue with the tut
terraindata.raw is a file you can only hopen with a hexeditor. You don't need this file. If you mean your heightmap that is used to store the land relief on is the HeightmapPrimary.raw which you can open with photoshop or similar programs.

Here is a picture, is this what you mean with the x-axis being flipped?
All things on the "east" side will end up on the west side ingame?

Don't worry about what ctrifle said :p the way with the minimap is the easiest way to do it.

I think that what it means is that if you create a heightmap in Ps or some other program, it will get flipped N-S when you open it in editor. Everything on the northern side will end up south and vice versa. The x axis stays where it is, hence MW saidd "around x axis".

There shouldnt be any change when you go from editor to game AFAIK.

Alright thanks guys! So just to be clear; the editor minimap is exactly the same as the ingame minimap? if i see a village in the upper right corner of the editor minimap I will see it at the exact same place ingame?

Yes and no. The editor raises the water level by 1 meter for some reason on the minimap (wont matter if you dont have any water planned on your map) and some objects dont render. Otherwise it shows exactly as is

Alright thanks crocop :)

Does someone know if there are more russian style buildings available to download somewhere ? Especially non-enterables since there are almost no non-enterable russian/communist buildings:/
I would like to try to avoid using middle-eastern buildings even if it's only a small arabic logo on the side or something.

Sorry lols I use photoshop all the time for terrain editing now, so its an easy thing for me to do, but do what MW said and just render a minimap and navigate.

You might want to read this:

https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f189-m ... mance.html

As far as non-enterables go, i would suggest putting together bunch of references as well as picking textures that would fit your map (what the enterable buildings are using, for example), and posting a request thread. Some modeler will hopefully grab the task :)

Alright yeah I will probably do that, thanks!

At the moment I am marking out the terrain, where fields, wood and building areas will be etc,
Is there anything critical I need to do before i really start making the map? Something which can't be changed later or something that has to be done at the beginning of mapmaking?
I got this feeling that i will finish the map after 1-x months and something wont work because I didn't change some setting :P
