Old America's Army player looking for new game.

Post by +EcK+Yontz »

Hi, I recently came across BF2: Project Reality while browsing for a new game that was similar in style to America's Army 2.5. The player base of America's Army has gotten so low that it is time for me to find a "newer" game that is similar to it. I was wondering if BF2 :P R has a active player base and if there are servers still up.

Hey Yontz, you can check out servers/playercount at any given time here: Project Reality: PRSPY
It usually peeks somewhere between 500 and 600p online during the weekend.

Heh if you enjoyed AA, you'll definitely enjoy PR. Back when I used to play AA, there wasn't soo much teamwork or at least I didn't notice any, but PR is more about teamwork set in a realistic enviorment (as much as we can due to engine limitations).

Cool! Trying to get my entire clan to transition over to a new game. BF2 :P R looks like a winner.

Grandma was slow but she was old!

Old AA was awesome, new AA sucks, PR better than both combined.

Welcome!

The servers I'd personally recommend are:

PRTA, or MeRk(19:00-01:00 GMT approx)
and
CIA (21:00-04:00 GMT approx)

You might have to bare with a few old PR salts who "aint got time to bleed" or play it slow, but start off small and get the grips for Infantry and land vehicles first. I wouldnt touch rotary or fixed wing unless your comfortable with it after practice in Coop, a Training server or a private LAN server. More complex than standard BF2. Besides, it helps to know how infatry and armour think when your engaging them from the air ;) .

Acknowledge some squad leaders / commanders want you to follow orders to a T, while others might not want to lead at all. Reading individual server rules helps not getting banned for "stealing assets" or "attacking out of bounds".

Pretty much everyone whos fun to play with uses the Mumble VoIP software that comes with PR in the install. You wont find many people using BF2's VoIP, as mumble lets you talk to other squadleaders (if you are one), the commander, everyone in the squad your in, or even the soldiers on your team right next to you (local chat). Run it as administrator to make it work!

This mod has been out for a while, so expect lots of players using acronyms in txt and over comms.
INF= Infantry
AT= Anti Tank
HAT= heavy Anti tank
AA/AAA =anti air
SL = Squad Leader
And other standard western military abbreviations.

See if you can get someone to explain grid refs, but more specifically the 'key-pad' subdivisions within them.
You might hear dudes shouting "enemy a 210!", which simply refers to the compass baring at the bottom of your screen.

Good luck Yontz! Hope you bring lots of bros to the fight.

Welcome to PR,

I remember your clan, played many hours with you guys, good to see you found your way here,

I also came over from AA, was litoralis.nMd for many years, from 1.7 up to the point they ruined the game with 3.0

The 2.5 community still holds Thursday night gaming sessions? Been a while since I started up 25Assist.

It's a shame the 2.85 community died, I loved those maps.

I can assure you that you will find what you're looking for in BF2 :P R ,

have fun,

EDIT: Anyone having a wave of nostalgia, you can still play AA2.5 here: http://aao25.com/ and 2.85 here (sort of) : https://sites.google.com/site/americasarmy285fans/

Ah that was a great game America's Army v2. Even the singleplayer training missions were great, and only if you passed them were you allowed to use certain kits in multiplayer. Never bothered with version 3 though, it honestly did not look that good at all.

LITOralis, how do they still play? Last time I checked AA officially took down the V2 servers etc...

Anyway g'day Yontz, there are still a few good servers running up with full or close to full players. You should hopefully see a surge of servers/players as we get closer to V1.0 though. As the others have said teamwork is great most of the time, was better a few years back lol.

Some maps you or your clan or individuals in your clan may dislike or hate but there are other maps that are addictive. Overall its great and has improved over the years and they have tweaked it really well .... most anything you may want to suggest like spawning on the squad leader or whatever has already been tried and exhaustedly playtested. Used to we could spawn on the squad leader but then it eventuall went to we can only spawn on or main base or on a fob that our team builds I think fob means forward observation base but then we allowed the squad leader to put down a spawn too but then that got tweaked more .... now he can put down a spawn, only one, he gets only one until he dies or reloads it and the spawn is only for his squad of course and only lasts for like 1 minute or maybe even 30 seconds and can only be placed if he has another squad member next to him and only if no other enemy whether seen or not are not near to him. So this is just an example of how much fine tuning there has been and this applies to most every single thing in the game.

It is definatelly worth a try and more than likely you will be glad you did.

Most servers ban the morons too :) also don't make any squads until the timer gets down to 1:34 seconds this is just one of the many fundamental rules lol ... and your main base is usually always a peaceful place no attacking the main bases usually enforced on all servers if one does then they get banned for however how long they feel like banning them most servers there is no shooting throwing smoke etc. in the main base and people that teamkill to much get punished too but accidents do happen.

There is a manual and all kinds of help read the how to instal link too. its all in the forums.

Hello Yontz,

Regarding the grids, Mongolian was talking about:

You might read or hear sth. like "enemy HAT in B5kp3skp7"
This translates to: "enemy HeavyAntiTank in Bravo 5 keypad 3 subkeypad 7"

Open the ingame map (m and/or CAPS). You will see The letters A-M on one side and the numbers 1-13 on the other. These form a grid. Each of the bigger squares has 9 smaller squares inside.

Now take a look at your Numpad-Block on the right side of the keyboard.

Each one of the smaller squares is one number. So the lower left is keypad 1 while the upper middle one is keypad 8.

The subkeypads basically work the same way but those lines aren't on the actual map for obvious reasons.

----

Enjoy your stay and as others have said, bring buddies!

Welcome to Project Reality. First of all I would recommend some good servers to play on. Thse are MeRk, CIA(from what I have heard) and NwA. You can look up servers in prspy.

Then some basics of PR. Start off in infantry squads. These are usually called MUMBLE INF or just INF. Tell the squad leader you are new and follow his instructions.

Now Im going to tell you about deviation. As weapon sway is imposible with BF2 engine, project reality uses deviation to replicate that. All you have to know is that your accuracy will decrease when you move. After sighting in with your weapon you should hold for a few seconds to gain your accuracy back before shooting.

Then some commons names/abbreviations you will hear in-game.

-Dead-Dead
A person that has gone past the "wounded" stage when he can still be revived by medic.

-APC
Armoured Personnel Carrier. In PR people usually call both APCs and IFVs(Infantry Fighting Vehicle) just APCs.

-HAT
Heavy anti-tank. Cabable of killing of killing any armoured vehicle. Even a tank with a good shot.

-LAT
Light anti-tank. Cabable of killing some APCs/IFVs with a good shot.

-CAS
Close air support. Can be used to define enemy aerial vehicle. "CAS helicopter" means attack helicopter.

-Laze
Lazer marker placed on the ground/vehicle for CAS to hit. Can be placed by squad leader/sniper with GTLD binoculars.

And when you download(ed) PR it comes with a manual. There is some good information in there.

Loved the 2. days of AA. Such fun memories. PR is much better in every aspect though. You will love it. The community is a great size, and you will meet a lot of good people. Depends on your time zone, but I live in West Coast USA and our peak hours are some of the slowest in PR. Night time on weekdays there is only 1 or 2 servers populated (64/64 normally), but weekends normally bring 3 or 4 full servers until very late at night. Daytime is when the majority of the community plays because of all the Euros. Normally 5 to 7 full servers.
