Deployable AT/AA ideas/vehicle mount
Hi all,
Right now emplacements are not in PR Vietnam but I wanted to supply some ideas that could be considered for based on some research and to generate some discussion. Thanks
US
M40 recoilness rifle

Was also more commonly vehicle mounted recoiless rifle, could be interesting for gameplay.
AA[/SIZE]
NVA
Working on an idea, however they did not use any such stationary AT like the US did, so some ideas are either a deployable MG for anti aircraft or the 75mm recoiless rifle.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
75 MM recoiless essentially a M20 copy, more from my research used primarily for the VC but since there is no similar weapon used INRL could be for the NVA.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Type-24, 7.92mm HEAVY MACHINEGUN
A Chinese copy of the German WWI vintage Maxim machine gun often used in an air defense role.
Would be good for AA for VC.
Or
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
37 mm automatic air defense gun M1939 (61-K)
Did not post AA for US as in my research other than portable AA there was no stationary AA for US in Vietnam.

Re: deployable AT/AA ideas/vehicle mount
These are awesome ideas, but the only problem is finding someone to model all of these. The M40 and M40 Jeep seem relatively easy to model, but the bigger hassle is having the AA and the Maxim.
Another problem would be having to balance the game out with the addition of these new assets, especially the deployable AA of the NVA, how do you expect to counter it with something on the US?

Napalm from an F4 Phanthom that's how you can counter it!

Re: deployable AT/AA ideas/vehicle mount
I have a model of the M40, but for some strange reason it would crash the game. Can't remember what it was... Making a new model would be best anyway.
I also have a Maxim model, with and without a shield. And EOD has a Quad 50 for the US.
Don't think we'll be adding the above things to the game, as that would mean even more work before v1.0 is released. But they may be introduced in the future, sure.

Re: deployable AT/AA ideas/vehicle mount
For NVA AA give them a Dshka mounted in a foxhole(which i think Insurgents and Taliban should get BTW) which will require no new models but will just be a case of combining 2 current models which shouldnt be too hard i hope.
here is what i mean:
Dshk in Vietnam
Another Dshk in Vietnam
A dshk in Afghanistan
Bottom line is theres a damn lot of Dshks out there in NAM and still in Afghanistan and Iraq and it would be cool to give some to these teams:
So there you go for NVA air defense and hopefully even insurgent AA.

Dhsk on a tripod is in the works but unlikely to be finished anytime soon.

Learning how to model [and texture] would work wonders to help the progress!waldov wrote:Is there anything some one who has no modding experience do to help it come along? I'm serious id really like to see this happen and offer help if i could.

Dshks would be a fair replacement on maps where the quad cannons are unrealistic or an unfair advantage to the NVA like on Charlie's Point

Cool to know there was something in the works and you have some models, I didn't know about the quad 50 in researching US stationary AA in Vietnam, so cool you brought that up. A quad 50 though prolly isn't a high priority since there wasn't much NVA aircraft use in Vietnam in the actual war, and currently in game there are no NVA aircraft on any maps really? If someone were to plan a project to bring assets in game I would just say leaveout the US AA for the foreseeable future or maybe do handheld like the
FIM-43 Redeye, which could be a limited AA kit like normal PR, then just have no handheld for the NVA/Vietcong

Think this is a wonderful idea! Maybe easier to do than the quad I mentioned and makes sense more for a deployable as quads are more vehicle mounted or emplaced, and also something that can have benefit for more of the mod like the Taliban is definetely more worthwhile. I hope to see this badly too for the Taliban/NVA.

Good to know its in the works, should be great to also add for the Insurgents.

I share your enthusiasm quite alot lol, and really want to see some things come along and im currently working on modding skills myself.
As for balance, I thought about when the mod comes along in the end just having the balance good to gameplay but also realism. In the real Vietnam war, the US was a powerhouse well equipped conventional faction, while the NVA was a faction above unconventional equipment wise, but much more guerrila and different in warfare then the US. I say ideally the US should be powerful in assets and equipment, but the NVA much more like a glorified militia with using things like AA, explosives and traps to counter the US firepower. Also some vehicles and airpower, but just not as much. For example on one map the NVA could get a lot of apcs and tanks, while the US gets few but has awsome AT firepower to counter. Or one map the US has a lot of armor, but the NVA guerila tactics balance that out, and with the NVA having deployable AA the US could have powerful aircraft and more of it.
I know this is a thread for deployables and vehicle mounts but good vehicles to add for the US would be:
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Minigun fire support from a gunship
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Bell AH-1 Cobra
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Bell UH-1 Huey attack variant( may already be ingame not sure)
Others too but most were mostly carrier/US air force based. Not sure how realistic that would be for a player to takeoff from a base camp in game and such, unless there was a map with the carrier in the Ocean like Charlies point where there could be player control CAS, then other jets and such could be incorporated.

Also agree, a cannon would tear *** up on a map like that so a idea as it being the only deployable AA, or a alternate deployable would be good. Also vehicle mounted quad could work as a asset, then the Dshk as the main deployable.tankninja1 wrote:Dshks would be a fair replacement on maps where the quad cannons are unrealistic or an unfair advantage to the NVA like on Charlie's Point

Oh, US also have an M163, which is totally badass as well .
And indeed, there are no NVA air assets in v0.98.

Any chance for a MIG-21 fighter being in the works or the NVA or the Mig-17? Or the Shenyang J-6 and J-5 fighter.[R-DEV]AfterDune wrote:Oh, US also have an M163, which is totally badass as well .

Also are you talking about the M163 VADS? M163 Vulcan Air Defense System (VADS) - Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun - History, Specs and Pictures - Military Tanks, Vehicles and Artillery
From that source it seems it wasn't very common in Vietnam as the M163 itself wasn't introduced until 1968 but more prominently fielded during the cold war period. However if it is realistic to have in Vietnam would be a neat idea, like a mobile AA vehicle, however for realism purposes a quad 50 on a truck is also a idea.

Re: Deployable AT/AA ideas/vehicle mount
I've done research and could not find any reports of Redeyes being deployed with troops in Vietnam. The main SAM support was Hawk missile batteries; NVA aircraft almost never went South for them to be able to shoot at anything. Some sources say they received them as early as late 1970 and others say 1972 or later, but the NVA for certain used SA-7 shoulder-launched SAMs.Lange wrote:A quad 50 though prolly isn't a high priority since there wasn't much NVA aircraft use in Vietnam in the actual war, and currently in game there are no NVA aircraft on any maps really? The US air defense guns (Quad-50s, M42 Dusters and for a limited time the M163 PIVADS; the latter two being self-propelled) in Vietnam were all used against infantry.
