I have a question: I haven't played PR in a while and am still running v0.973, would it be easier for me to delete PR from my system and start over with v1.0, or should I just go ahead and proceed to downloading v1.0 with v0.973 still in place?

Delete 0.97 since it's not used in any way for v1.0.

No, you need to uninstall 0.97 and then install 1.0.
