How to solve Startup problems with PR1.0 in 5 Steps

Post by KPECTOK »

[R-COM]LITOralis.nMd. Note : This is a partial solution, and a temporary solution while a work around for compatibility issues is found, expect this sticky to change , this post is to get people with this error up and running, even if it takes a few steps each time you start.
Hi guys!!!
I tried to solve the problem with the lunching for a day and here is some ways to solve it:
***DO NOT DELETE ANY THING LIKE THEY SAY!!! TRY THIS!!!
Step 1:
Change your resolution to:
If you run in any of the below resolutions on a LCD display , change to 1024?768@60H windowed mode

3 Extended Graphics Array 3.1 XGA (1024?768 )
3.2 WXGA (1366?768 and similar) 3.2.1 1366?768
3.2.2 1360?768
3.2.3 1280?800
3.3 XGA+ (1152?864)
3.4 WXGA+ (1440?900)
3.5 SXGA (1280?1024)
3.6 SXGA+ (1400?1050)
3.7 WSXGA+ (1680?1050)
3.8 UXGA (1600?1200)
3.9 WUXGA (1920?1200)

and in Documents\ProjectReality\Profiles\0001\Video it should be like this:

VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 3
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 3
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 3
VideoSettings.setResolution 1280x1024@60Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 8Samples
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 2

(and so as in Default)
save and close.

1b. (For those with CRT displays) If you run in any of the Above resolutions on a CRT display , change to 1024?768@75H windowed mode

and in Documents\ProjectReality\Profiles\0001\Video it should be like this:

VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 3
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 3
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 3
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 3
VideoSettings.setResolution 1280x1024@75Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing 8Samples
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 2

(and so as in Default)
save and close.

Step 2:
Go to your Battlefield 2 folder , either in Program Files, Program Files (x86), or Steam folder, default is C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\battlefield 2\ or your custom Batlefield 2 installation dfirectory.

Right click on PRBF2.EXE and click properties->Compatibility(on top)->click on the box with "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and then click windws 7/8(for those who got it) and click ok.

*** do the same thing by right clicking on the Project Reality BF2.shortcut on desktop... open containing folder and change to win 7/8 in Launcher and Updater with the same way as said above but then click on the box on both files with "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" again so it will be gray and then OK.

Step 3.
Got to the launcher and click play.
After the game works Exit.

Step 4.
Change it in the launcher options to your screen resolution but still no full screen.
Enter the game... exit the game and go to your launcher options and do full screen.

Step 5.
Go to Options->Global in the launcher and change the direction folders in "update download/log" location to
*your folder such as Program Files\Battefield 2 Complete Collection , Program Files (x86)\Battefield 2 Complete Collection , or Steam folder, default is C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\battlefield 2\ or your custom Batlefield 2 installation directory.

Play and enjoy the game.

Note from [R-COM]LITOralis.nMd. : Working on creating a permanent fix, this is a temp thing to get you playing now.

You will have to go to the BF2 main folder every time and change it to win 7/8 before you play the game ans is said in Step 2.

P.S It can be your antivirus blocking the program! unblock it from blocking !!!

IF IT WORKED RATE IT PLEASE!!!

First of all than you for taking the time to solve this for everyone / most of us.

I followed the guide by step but there seem to be more issues going on as sometimes I am able to launch and sometimes it just does not work and is pretty random.

( Having Win 8.1 I've tried Win 8 and 7 just in case to no avail )

It worked for me when nothing else did! Thank you so much. Hopefully the DEVs will address this problem and maybe fix it in the next update.

KPECTOK, Thank you!
When I get some free time I'll sit down and figure out why this works, and see if we can make a a recommendation to AncientMan so he can find a permanent fix.

I have to first install BF2 and PR on my win8 machine, then test this out... I also have to install a gaming GPU too, so will take a bit of time.

my only suggestion is wait for a new patch because they know what the problem is and now they are trying to fix it... at least you can play the game.
give the developers some time and they WILL fix it.

ChessKnight,
your report says:
Generic PnP Monitor on Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000

Do you have a discrete GPU?

If you do not have a discrete GPU, you need to significantly lower your graphics settings or PR will use up all your shared video RAm and then stall/crash .

If you have a discrete GPU, you need to make sure that PRLauncher, PRBF2.exe and PRMumble.exe are all set to use the discrete GPU and not the iGPU HD 4000.

Lito, I can't believe it, it actually worked! I had the programs set on auto-select, but when I manually selected the discrete GPU, it worked.

Thanks dude...

Alright, i unistalled everything: PR, mumble, punkbuster, bf2. Deleted all files under documents (Battlefield&&projectReality), user\rob\appdata\local\projectReality.

Turned off McAfee Virus scanning and Firewall, went to control panel and turned off windows firewall(managed by mcafee).
steps: (not an exhaustive list, there were reboots involved along the way)
rebooted
installed BF2, 1.4, 1.5
installed pr1.0
updated all pr1.0 updates
verified that bfpr.exe/prlauncher.exe/prupdate.exe all windows 7 compatible
verified all executable will run as administrator
ran PRLauncher.exe
set video to 1024x768
edited video.con files for default&&001 to have 1280x1024 video settings, per your instructions from the beginning of this thread.
launched PR,(ef yeah, it seemed to work)
loaded into a server
disconnected
ran PRLaucher
changed video display mode to 1920x1080@60hz, fullscreen checkbox, UNCHECKED.
select play
intro video launches
pr error clear cache, what ever the standard message is, should have it memorized by now :*(

and now i have to wait for some time, about an hour, because of the ungraceful exit from pr/ea login
"1004: error connecting to the server.(10061)"

So any other suggestions, or should i just play in 1024x768 mode :(

p.s. thanks for trying to help resolve this for me and others.

whats your setup like? laptop connected to external monitor? Did you disable your laptop screen before playing? Based on your Support Info, I think the game is detecting two screens: the 1920x1080 and the 1680 x 945 and the 1680x945 is probably the one causing issue. So if you can try disabling the laptop monitor (ctrl+F2 or F3 or closing the lid), it might work.

i'll try that next. After the initial success, then failure, i've been unable to relaunch pr with the prescribed setup again. so back to unistalling/reinstalling. this time i cleared out regedit. i'll try disabling my second monitor for this.
