My first steps in 3D modeling. It's so called "RPG-2"... I know, it's just horrible.

Doesn't look too bad for a first model but I think the area you can improve on the most right now (assuming that the upload to sketchfab didn't screw up your smoothing) is your smoothing groups :)

Here's a pretty good tutorial on them which should help :)

So is there any room for a total noob like me?

Bored to death, haven't used 3dsmax for weeks, forgot nearly everything about it. Had the amazing idea of starting a long project, which will take oh my, more than a year easily. Ambitious indeed, but one step at a time and I'll finish it, one day. Don't care if it can't be used in any game, if it just won't work, this is relaxing, I like doing this, even though my models suck.

So it's time to warm up the engines, as a result, with little knowledge and most of my skill forgotten, I present you this unfinished, terrible 12.7 cm/40 Type 89 Naval Gun, without the equipment inside, it's just a blue thing trying hard to be it's real life counterpart. This is pretty much all my skills thrown into something, I can do better I know, if I ever finish watching the two tutorials I used to watch....

Nice stuff Lucky.Boy. One thing that is really handy is a script for weld seams. F.e Those small handles, are they pinned in or welded on? Nice chunky welds look really sweet up close in FPV too.

Does this only work in newer max versions, though? couldnt get it to work in max 9. I can take the highpoly to max 2013 for these details and then bake it, its just a nuisance really, as I could get it all done in 9.

Not sure, I can check when I get back home. Not really sure why it would't though unless its a incompatibility in script rollout or some bollocks like that.

If you load it up in newer max anyhow, you can pretty much get the idea of how it works by just looking through the modifier stack and trying to emulate.

Horrendous workflow, but you could always throw it all in 2013, do the welds, export the welds back to 9 and delete the rest you took into 13.

Max9 really is just such a hold-back for bf2 modding.

No need to backport anything, I can do the welds in 2013 and bake the normals in 2013, all that I need the 9 for is to export the lowpoly, which was modelled in 9 of course. There is a little bit of nuisance though, especially since the newer max runs much slower than the max 9 on my weak machine..

Im looking to get back into modelling, any new information I need regarding maya/max modelling in the 2014 editions or is it still similar to 2012?

Pretty much the same. 2014 has some nice new toys though. Been using the sculpting tools in it a lot.

Due to the lack of time I didn't model for nearly two years. As a finger exercise I decided to model and texture another helicopter. More precisely I'm modeling a Kiowa OH58-C from scratch. It's still far from finished and needs a whole lot of optimization, some details and tweaking.

Nice model!
Do you consider modelling and contributing in some way to PR?
Because to me it looks like you have some skill!
