If i can give one criticism, it's that it's really dark, i get blinded opening my map sometimes.

Not having loaded the map up, I can't comment on how dark it is. But I will say this is a valid concern and it looks pretty dark. The vast majority of footage I've found of the fighting in Grozny '96 depicts lighter skies.

After taking a look on the map: It's an extremely detailed and realistic looking city. The static placement is absolutely brilliant.

It's too dark tho, it was a bit too stressful on the eyes, and the inside of the dark concrete buildings are almost completely black. It also makes the minimap too dark to distinguish any city squares or roads. All in all, it'll be one of my favourite city maps in the game that's for sure.

Perhaps multiple sky colors, simulating changes in weather throughout the First Chechen War? In addition, the BMP-3 seems out of place for Chechnya (only one or two pics on web), perhaps try the ru_ifv_bmp2 (Its a BMP-2 with a Konkours missile launcher on top, would be a nice substitute for a Russian BMP-1).

the production values of this map put a lot of the older ones to shame! I hope the devs plan to remove some of the most ancient maps when gems like this, kumbula, nuijama and such are due. Something like Basrah or Asad Khal stealing server time from this would be sad.

What? Stealing server time?

Despite what people say, I think servers have been good about variety. There's no point removing perfectly good maps from PR unless there's a good technical reason to.

Ever thought of a day layout as well?

This dusk/dawn with fog is very neat and it should be kept.

Over the years old maps have always been axed in favour of newer ones...

Or we 'd still have EJOD..

Gonna kick things off with the most important issue. Performance. It's pretty bad. Even alone, on a local server my frame-rate in the city was simply too low. This won't be a easy fix. You simply need to figure out what detail you want to keep. What major buildings you might need to replace. It will not look as good. But this in the first place a video game, not a art gallery. Performance is very important :) Ive you can squeeze out 10 extra frames or a bit more it should be nearly fine I hope. But right now I don't see how it's gonna be playable.

The atmosphere is amazing though. Lighting can be made a bit brighter though. It's quite too dark for the time of day you choose.

Fog settings aren't right. The fog cuts in too fast. Need to blend it out better.

Minimap is also too dark. And it doesn't go well with the super bright grid. Have to play with the opacity there a bit of the grid and just give it some more brightness.

Doesn't seem like you did lightmaps in 3dsmax, which is needed for final release as you got many custom buildings with no lightmap samples. Might also help you by optimizing them and saving some lightmap space.

Interesting. I didn't have any drop in FPS on this map.

The only criticism I can find is that the Zastava van has desert textures where it should probably have some darker ones (I don't know much about mapping)

It's a masterpiece of work.

Attention to details is superb, the first Soviet geographic map to included central heat piping,
the farm areas look totally natural,
everything, it's just really really well done.


Now the criticism,
Going to need optimization, and quite a bit.
The central area with the trestle bridge, several enterable buildings, the ruined buildings, trees, and burning cars, ... it's too much, I'm getting 47 FPS, where even on the other worst maps, I rarely get below 67FPS at the worst spots.

I agree with everything litoralis said. For another reference for FPS, sbeneh just me running around the city I get 45-50 fps, grozny I get around 25. So if I get 50 fps on sbeneh and many people find it look laggy, think about how that will effect grozny.

I don't seem to get much of a frame rate drop on this for some reason where as I do on Sbeneh.

I got solid 40-60 frames in the city and 80-90 outside it. Nothing worse than fallujah or sbeneh...
My system is pretty powerful though. I'd wait for the feedback of the playtest.
