Vehicle naming issues.

Post by Qiezi the pleb »

In many video games, the Chinese quadruple 25mm SPAAG with shoulder mounted IR guided missiles were iterated as the PGZ-95, or in PR, known as the Type 95 SPAAG. It is needed to point out that, such weapons should be named as the PGZ-04 SPAAG, at least for its version in PR.

The following would be a short description of the difference, and brief history, for anyone interested.

In the 1980s, China began to develop a new generation of SPAAG weapons. On 1987, China has developed the PG-87 AA gun, a double 25mm fixed AA gun. This is because that despite China does not have the field AA capabilities of the USSR, hence AA guns needs longer ranges, where the PG-85, a copy of the AM-23, was ditched. Between 1986 and 1989, prototypes were mounted on type 63 APCs to test out capabilities and tested in the Tibetan plateau. Eventually, the centerline guns were ditched in place of the side-mounted guns, inspired by the SIDAM-25. In 1996, the PGZ-95 was eventually produced.

The PGZ-95[1995] closely resembles how most video game iterates the quad 25mm SPAAG. However, the key difference is that the PGZ-95[1995] does not have fire control, radars, or missiles. After the millennium, the PLA began developing a Gun-Missile system with MANPADS missile mounted on the original PGZ-95 Chaises. Originally the FN-6 was proposed, which was akin to the French Mistral, but due to the development issues, the FN-6 was not ready, hence the QW-1s for exports were mounted. Additionally, search&track radars, fire controls and other features were upgraded as well. These weapons are called the PGZ-04, while the later versions, with FN-6, are called the PGZ-04A. By 2010, most PGZ-95s were upgraded to the two standards. There was also the "PGZ-2000", shown in 1999, but only as a Western codename for quad 25mm SPAAGs with FN-5 missiles, most likely for decorating purposes at the time.

Looking back into PR, the AAV for Chinese forces, was equipped with QW-2 missiles and rangefinders, a way to demonstrate fire controls in the game. These are qualities that the type 04, or PGZ-04 features, and not the type 95.

Thanks a lot for the info. We will correct this!
It is really hard to find information about Chinese military equipment, so if you find anything else with wrong name or wrong capabilities (e.g. we are unsure if the ZLS92 should have thermals), feel free to let us know.
