Re: Artillery calculator
There is an artillery calculator on number 2 for insurgent mortars or number 3 or 4 for conventional factions. If they have no PRX calculator is on 4. You can create yourself a sheet with the different ranges and barrel elevation angles for specific mid range.
You click the numbers to change the numbers for distance from squad leader who needs to be next to mortars to find accurate distance to target. Otherwise do math with the grid keys on the map (1x1km(75m), 2x2km(150m), 4x4km(300m) or 8x8km(600m) maps).
Click calulate to get the second number which is your barrel angle. Then you move the dial using W or S to the number calculated
You bracket an area like objectives, while firing you can change barrel elevation by using W or S. You set your sheet up to know how many single taps it takes to change distances. Minimum range is 80 meters, maximum is 1500 meters.
For grenadier, if you cannot aim outward due to potentially getting instantly shot, you can aim straight up and fire for a mortar effect from 40MM, landing about 20 seconds later.
No matter the range, it always appears to be 20 seconds for mortars to travel. Keep mortar fire off friendlies, don't reach shells near them. Check map, calculate 20 seconds of infantry travel distance.
For your viewing pleasure... Here is a view following a mortar shell, from the mortar, through the air and to the ground. Life of a mortar shell, a physical ingame object which you can see if you know how to focus your mind to see this litte dive bomb birdy hit the ground.

To counter mortars the best you can, go prone in the lowest defilade low ground you can find as soon as you hear the incoming noise. Don't look at explosions.
If in an emplacement like a foxhole or otherwise, DIG for your life. Always spread out super FOB emplacements or anything else fortified like armor out to mortar spread at minimum. Big line.
Fun Fact: A super FOBs can be completed in 60-120 seconds with a full squad if each man digs one thing while SL runs placing assets. Each man digs their own thing, medic drops their kit at their selected dig, gets rifleman kit. Then instead of helping each other dig you run ammo then man assets.

1 Man per piece of cover, Move cover to cover. In view of each other to save each other by shooting, distraction, division of enemy attention and ammo. 1 man hit per RPG/tank shell/mortar spread formation full time. Edge of cap zone. Use camouflage, police up each others exposure, no man seen sticking out. Scan aggressively with eyes and ears for anything suspect, even for birds disturbed to fly out of trees
