Why the Merlin is the most under-used helo ever.

Post by Matrox »

Just had a quick bash on a 24/7 basrah server and my god, did we find a new use for the merlin!

It all started when the round started. [R-Dev]Evilhomer jumped in the helo, and screamed me to jump in. I only had an engie kit, but as it was just us two in the squad there was no use dropping me off by my lonesome, so we came up with a new plan.

We decided that we really needed to get the bridges out of action, to hinder the movement of the civvies cars. So, I leaned out of the left position and guided homer over one of the bridges. I dropped the C4 out of the window, saw it smack onto the bridge, and blew it into tiny bits. What a feeling!

We did this to the other three bridges bar one, which we left open so we could funnel thier movements. This where the real excitement began. I dropped off and grabbed a heavy at kit. jumped back in the helo, charged to the bridge we left open.

We looked around for people when suddenly a motorbike came screaming along with a passenger on. The chase was on.

I spotted the bike and Homer span into action. He pulled up alongside the bike trying to match his speed as i directed him in the direction to go. I was leaning out of the left side when i took a shot at the bike, but missed. We carried on trying to chase the bike whilst i reloaded until we saw it was going along the main road. Homer circled quickly round the city and sped to the other side Sideways on to the road, he lowered me down. If I was that bike I would be bricking it. A merlin just flew out from behind some buildings, and there is a guy hanging out of the side with a heavy at pointing at my head. Was the most satisfying kill yet.

We then spent the rest of the round either dropping c4 ontop of vehicles/people from a great height, or hunting vehicles with heavy at. PR doesnt get better than that!

Who said the merlin is just a taxi?
If you can find the four ninjas in my post, pm me to find out the prize....

My god, the DEVs are behind the public by about three months :p I've done it many times. The only AT shot someone's managed to make out of my Merlin was when we were looking for ammo caches over the village and some Toyota started firing on us, and then moving. Clever. Not. One L-AT fired, a quick 180 yaw and a second L-AT is popped off and strikes fear into those Insurgent scum.

As ya can see, I like to fly the Merlin :) I've had a few people shout at me over mic for flying too close to trees and buildings etc. They also don't seem to like me circling RPG gunners, who are just itching to hit me, but can't.

Underused my left foot -- I normally use it for aircav and up-armed gunshipping.

What else is heavy AT on basrah for?

I did that with BH. Was firing H-AT from one in Jabal. Kudos to my pilot, CP20000

I couldn't do that on Basrah, the Merlin lags to much for me to fly that low. Takes all I can do to land with out crashing! Goes to show the the Merlin is probably the most forgiving heli in PR since I've manage to run a successful taxi service with it even with the lag.

Old ;)

I did that on Devfile, when it was still up, Medic and Rifleman on miniguns, a pilot and 2 SFs, including me in the BH.

Hover over the bridge, throw Slams down, gtfo :D

I really like the merlin, easy to fly. :-P I will have to try that one day! Although last time I was on Al basrah in the merlin, I got teamkilled for it with a 50 cal while trying to repair. :-(

Hehe! Airmining!
I hope we will get the claymores back sometimes? Had a lot of fun with them and a helicopter in GREY area during 0.5. :)

Speaking of MERLINS...next time I'm flying you grunts places, DO NOT OPEN MY F*CKING BACK HATCH.

A merlin can take 2 RPG hits before being taken down. With one hit, it's harder to fly but I can still do it.

IF YOU OPEN MY F*CKING HATCH ONE HIT SETS OFF ALL THE ALARMS AND I EVENTUALLY LOSE CONTROL.

The problem with the Merlin is that it is very large and fairly sluggish. It makes a prime target for any type of enemy high calibre fire. If you're going to be successful in the Merlin you need to fly close to the ground and have the ability to hover. The amount of people who are unable to hover, attempt to drop off passengers and then fly into them is damn frustrating :(

Little Bird on the other hand is ideal for most situations. The US can make great use of it on Qwai :)

Also, some servers (I'm looking at you, TG) don't like people firing heavy ordinance from the back of choppers, claim it's unrealistic.

For me, until the game actually prevents you from firing a LAT or HAT from the side of a chopper - either by not letting you arm the weapon, or by killing everyone else inside the bird on launch - it's fair game.

Dunehunter, I think it was with me and a few iGi guys on Qwai that we were doing that in the LB... loaded up with HAT and some SAWs and went gunshipping, back in the Open Beta? Was hella fun :D
