Global Ranking System

Post by Tomcat »

Reading all the previews and interviews with devs ..i get the feeling that we gonna get a ranking/stat system similar to AA honor. People with higher honor will get to select first, gonna have wider selection of guns etc. I have two questions/concerns:

1. How the mod is going to be integrated with them stats. Having completely separate stats/ranking for the mod would be cool, but don't you need a huge computation power + db to stream all the servers to, like SCI?

2. Doesn't really concern the mod, but I have a sneaky feeling that stats and honor in BF2 is gonna be like AA, which you can only lease official servers tracking stats from only one company, or you have to pay fee in order to get a private server to stream to the master db.

Yeh ur probably right on both counts there, I just hope if it is that way, EA/Dice don't sell out to Gamespy or someone like that for it, n run they're own servers.

Im sure that there will be Official servers, and then there will be unofficial servers. Just like AA, where it tracks your stats, and then in unofficial sercers they dont. So i wouldnt plan on all the servers to be sold by EA, but i can see EA only selling the Tracked ones. There should also be a lot of people selling unofficial servers anyhow.

I like BF1942's scoring system(any server you can get points) but a difference would be that the game auto saves them in a file so you can go back n read stats

I think that instead of having the stats stored on offical servers, they should be saved into a file in the game directory on ur PC, that way weneva u join to ANY server, it uploads ur stats to the server.

But there might be problems with that like how in AA you can change a text file to compleate all of the training

really don't have an issue personally with having official stats tracking honor etc...

at the end of the day both BHD and JO (only recenlty) have official nova servers...with stats...but noone gave a damn..honestly...

problem is when it starts affecting the gameplay...i.e....playing on my private server for hours...and have no ranks..etc...and someone comes that plays in official servers..and get first priority to choose the better guns..better positions etc.....this is when it starts beeing annoying...

plus...when stats affect gameplay..people go stats frick...so looking more intentionally for cheats...cause they want to get their honor..really high...

also..creates lots of friction...as people that coming within a server..and they are new to the game..get called noobs..and all sorts...not given the chance to learn the game...

bottomline...i would like to see a server side option..where you would be able to disable special previledges..for high ranking players...

Yeh that could wrk, or, go with the on pc stored data, as that way u can get up rank etc while playing offline against bots or at LANs, but make it so that only the game itself can edit the file, have it encrypted or something. Yes there'll probably be those that might manage to beat the encryption, but those same ppl could probably hack their online stats to change them anyway. This would give those ppl who can't always play against other people online the ability to get their rank up, n not play the game for 4mnths vs bots n at LANs, n then hav that all go to waste, just because they weren't doing all that gaming on an official online server.

I have herd that the guns wont be "better" for players with higher stats. BF:2 wanted to have a little somthing to give the higher ranked players, but not kill the gameplay. for example, the basic riflemen will get a M16 with no "upgrades", as a soldier that has a better rank will have that same M16 except have a red dot sight. So u see, the M16's will be unchanged, meaning no "extra ammo, grenades, shoots farther, scopes" just a little somthing to help you stand out. I remember reading this from a Dev chat. I am too lazy to go try to track it down... just take my word for it.

As for the higher players picking the position they want first... i doubt that, i mean, why will BF go and mess up their perfect "player position picker" for? they know everyone likes it, so why go do somthing that could change the minds of thousands, or hundreds of people from playing it? I just dont see it happening, i can see the Squad thing, but i think u will be able to pick whatever you want... The squad thing is mostly for the VOIP thing, so u dont hear 40 other players on your team talking all at once. BUT REMEMBER, this is what i think

well the squad setup is more acctually to encourage team play  , but yeh, good to know that there'll be no major power changes due to rank.

Not to clear on wot ur tlkin bout with the 'player position picker' bit, but I know that if in the game 2 players select to go as commander, then the higher ranking player is the one that gets it.

I mean the main menu... where you can pick what position you want to play and where you want to spawn. Yes, the squad seperation is to incourage teamplay, and to limit the VOIP, but i dont see how they can go and change thier main loadout screen, which is used for BF:1942, Desert Combat, BF:Vietnam, and change somthing that durastic. That could be a make or break thing for the game... it would kill their idea of "gameplay first" becuase it would limit people... somthing that BF Devs said they diddnt want to do, and what brings so many people to the game.

Concerning statistics, has anyone played Unreal Tournament, the original? Think it was released late 1999. They had a global ranking system. Your score was compromised of a balance of everything you did, but the best was: If you killed someone higher ranked then you, you received more points. Just like when someone a lot worse then you killed you, you lost a lot more on the scoring table. But the balance (medic, flag, engineer points all have to be there, and weighted correctly)

yeah....ranking systems are good....and personally i think that AA's honor system is quite good as well...along with aaotracker...

My issue is...that I hope they allow all the servers to track official stats...not only their officials...like goaa....

[BFCentral.ca]: Are they going to allow all the dedicated servers to track stats in this global database? Or only the official ones like America's Army?

[DICE]: Only Official Ranked servers will track stats and unlocks. As it stands, if a BF2 player wants to earn their stripes, they’ll need to play on an official ranked server. If they want to just play the game without the pressure of stats, promotions, etc…then they can play on a regular BF2 server. We went this route mainly because of security. People need to know that the Stats & Tracking system is secure in order for it to have value.

You are going to introduce a online gaming community upon the release of BF2, could you explain a little about it?

When you register your copy of BF2 you will at the same time create a personal online-profile. This is the profile you will use to play with in BF2. The online community then logs all your statistics, and there is a lot of statistics, about 42 different types. All from how good you are from shooting with a handle weapon to how good of a medic you are. You will also get medals and other things. When you get better ranking you will be able to unlock totalu new weapons. There is a lot of being high rank in BF2.
so from what i can gather...only in official servers u gonna be able to play with the extra guns...if ur qualified...in private ones..u won't be able to unlock them weapons...

So everyone will like to use them weapons...therefore EA will say...u want an official server..here is the ONLY company..leasing them out...show us how big ur wallet is... :)

Seriously now..this will become a huge problem for small (cheaper) dedicated servers...especially is u can carry ur rank in the non official servers as well...like the honor....for example..if someone comes in the server and has just a nickname...that's cool...if u carry ur ranks in a non official servers...then the problem starts...

whoever has played AA u know what i mean...a guy comes in with 80-90 honor...and all saw..wow..and all that...a guy with 10honor is in...all call him noob...etc...players prefer honor servers..in order to get their honor up..etc...

some food for thought..although it won't affect this mod...

You'll probably see the community develop ways to bypass and unlock other abilities on private servers.

i thought that the team voted for people who applied at the begining of the match then if no one votes(or something like that) the game would choose the higher ranking dude.

It can be done that way, but u don't hav to hav a commander in a game, ie. no-one applys to be one, or the server has commander turned off, cos I think it's also a server option. But yeh, ppl can vote for the commander, but if to guys apply for it, n no-one votes for either, then it's decided on by their rank. Same as with the Squad leaders, if someone with higher rank joins the squad he can choose to become that squads leader.

Couldnt that be bad though if a group of people had a really good squad leader, but just started the game so his rank is low. It could ruin the whole squads idea if they wind up doing that.
