it usually crashes at around 14% on the lode screen, but it varies. when it crashes in the game im usually in a vehicle, like a helicopter but sometimes it just crashes anyways

Have you tried using the new bf2.exe made by [R-DEV]Ancientman? It allows more memory to he used on BF2, follow the installation, see if that helps:
Q: I am getting crash to desktops when loading/changing levels.
Q: I am getting a lot of lag on levels.

A: The most common cause of this is that you are running out of memory. BF2 was a memory intensive game, and PR only increases on that.

First, you can try lowering your video settings, in particular, Textures. If that doesn't help or fix your issue, you can try increasing your virtual memory. Information on how to do this is located in the Installation Guide wiki. See HERE.

If that STILL doesn't work, you can try patching your bf2.exe to allow it to use more than 2GB of memory. Firstly, you want to backup your current bf2.exe in your /Battlefield 2/ folder. To do this, simply rename it from bf2.exe to bf2.exe.original. You should back it up incase you have any issues in the future. Now you need to download the patched bf2.exe. This can be found in THIS zip file (THIS one if your using the EA Downloader version) (If you get a virus warning, ignore it, just a false positive). Simply extract it next to bf2.exe.original, and your good to go. Thanks to R.J.Travis for the original method.
Follow those instructions, and report back if it solves your problem :)

maybe this would help because i had that same problem when loading maps then to a ctd... first check if you have the multiplayer .85 core and levels before installing the singleplayer. For example the map ejod desert wont work when you look at its file in D:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\prsp\levels\ejod_desert there is no client.zip file but when you look at this file for multiplayer D:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\levels\ejod_desert there is a client.zip file. try copying the client.zip file from multiplayer to singleplayer map files and maybe your good to go.. note that you should copy the client.zip file of the same map.
