Well R9 280X has good Rep for being a relatively inexpensive card that manages to run a lot of modern titles at ultra.
If you wanna spend more, GTX 770 and, R9 290 are good choices. On the lower price pracket R9 270 is a great choice. On the Nvidia side one of the higher end 660s could be worth a look.

So if you have the funds, go with the LGA1150 i7-4XXXK series CPU, try to find quiet cooling solutions, that PC will be next to you for long periods of time while living dormlife.

Here is what a friend of mine as a professional 3d designer has in the box.

It may be too much for you for starters, but once you start making monies ( if you dont already ) this kind of investment will pay itself. As for GPU its not that important in rendering - its CPU and RAM. He was on the way of getting a ram drive and another SSD, and a new GPU because of gaming. I think he was talking about GTX770 ( not sure if SLI or what ).

Right now if I were to buy a new computer it would be top of the line Core i5 "k" version along with a GTX 770.
Next major upgrade I plan on is getting a 5th generation Core i5 along with the x70 series NVIDIA GPU.
Right now I have a 2nd gen i5 with a GTX 680 (which I really don't need to upgrade soon)

SLi board with a 550W PSU seems odd.
I checked if your RAM was QVL and its alot cheaper on NEWEgg!
