Yes, but its increasing the performance. You know what is one of the main things making a game? It must reach high performance and good looking in the same time. So developers must chose between quality and performance.

Most PR players have high graphics settings and the vanilla models don't look good.

actually the new weapons are better performance wise, than the old ones, even though their tri count is higher.
many of the current weapons that are ingame only have a lod1 and 2 (these are level of details that you see at different ranges)
For instance, the QBZ only had lod0-2, while the new one has lod0-3 and is optimized to work better at ranges, that means that the whole system is optimized properly.
you can easily have a high tri count on a weapon in this engine, but if you don't handle it properly and optimized it, then eventually it is going to pull on the performance of the system.

We are not all coders and similar. There is only so much a team member can do, and this is one of them.
And trust me when i say that gameplay and similar is always under discussion and being thought about a lot within the team.

We just played failed clan match on Qwai River last week, I have put in a shift with Chinese LMG: scoped and single-shot mode, the beast of a thing, rapid-fire medium-range sniper.
Would be nice to have both scoped and unscoped (map dependent, right-click choseable, or unscoped spawnable/scoped requestable (2 per team or somesuch).

Not to forget MEC got the G3 series long before the M16A4's were done, USMC cranked around with vanilla M16A2s with 4x zoom on ironsights.
