It is very hard to see whats going on with a black background.

Remember if you ever want a job, never send out renders with a black background. They usually get insta-trashed by the recruiters. They watch so many demo reels every day that if yours annoys them in any way. you won't get hired.

Interior is allmost ready. Need to make textures for 1p interior (40% ready) so i can copy the dashboard from there. There is actually no need for that because the truck is so high that you cant see in there but... IF someone somehow try to take a look inside then there is texture.

QUESTION TIME!

What we have here is chains that can be applied to wheels.

What is the best way to make these chains on the model? Can i make them move along with the truck? Like when moving forward the chains go back and when the truck stops, the chains go forward. Or should i just make very detailed chains with 3dsMax and then make normals of them and bake those on the UV map?

Just remove them m8. I cant see a way doing that realistically and still looking good in BF2. Except for a really good alpha map but then it will still look flat. And you can't make it move.

Plus an alpha for that is very expensive in terms of rendering just for that. 2nd just removing them.

They look good in ofp/arma FDF mods and its done via textures. Them not moving never bothered me.

Am I in the wrong forum here? I thought this the PR:BF2 forums? Arma can take 2/4x more detailed models. And their alpha texture shaders are different as well.

Anyway, we gave our advice. Your model so do as you please :)

I think Leopardi's point was, that the chains can look good even if they don't move around with the vehicle and are done by textures.

IF we end up doing the chains, it'll be modelling the chains in high detail and then baking down the color, spec, normals and alpha. Seeing that it's quite a hassle and the model doesn't require an alpha layer otherwise, it's probably better to leave the chains out. Though I think it would be fun to model the chains with a physics modifier etc. just for practice  but that's another thing

btw Kovanaama the scale of the chains is off, they're too small

Another thing, could it be possible to apply the same physics code that the antennas use to other objects in BF2? I'm not saying it would be practical, just wondering whether it's possible or has been done already. That way you could have the chains sway with the movement of the vehicle, in theory at least

And my reply was that it probably won't in PR. As the 3d part seems horribly flat and it would look really bad, even with a awesome texture. You would also need to make them pretty big on the UV at the cost of other parts which seems like a waste.

I was thinking about the antennas as well. Although they would probably have to be childobjects and need to be made as skinnedmesh. I looked on the bfeditor forums and it seems some people managed to make very basic antennas but I can't see many people attempting more difficult skinnedmeshes that way.

But this all seems a big amount of work with no gain at all. Perhaps it can be looked at more after the truck itself is done?

Splatters: Bablo made this model so there might adjustments here and there but i leave it like that.

I think that best solution is to make most detailed chains as possible for the texture and leave it like that. If i start to study new things, this model will take MUCH more time. Moving chains would be pretty awesome but i dont have a time for that, sadly.

But guys the texture! :D What do you think? I think it needs more dirt and scratches.

Yes, alot more detail is needed :D Scratches, dirt (we love our grunge and dirt), dents if you like. Also the base texture you have atm seems darker than the real one and a bit dull? The different color areas seem more defined in the RL pic

Image

I also see a bit of 'pixelization' on the base, so if you want to try to make that smaller if you can. I know BF2 doesnt give the greatest advantage to lots of fine detail but a nice metal base looks nice :) (this may be miniscual just saying, and it will prob be hidden by dirt and such later too)

Also, do you have any normals? 8-)

Can't wait to test this on battlefield.
I drive these things almost every day in real life ^^

Pretty much in a mod where we are constantly hitting the memory budget - to justify a alpha channel (larger memory size) it really needs to be worth it, in this case I really dont think it is.

The alpha can be put into the Diffuses alpha channel to replace the Spec map for just the chains at the cost of having no spec for them, or alternatively you could UV it to its own small texture sheet but wouldn't recommend the second unless a spec was really worth it.

I know, at the end of the day its still ultimately wasteful for what it is considering the mods situation.

Yes, i agree. We're just going to remove the chains.
