PR is new to arma and it will take them a long time to get to the same skill level as many of the other mod teams; DO NOT expect PR to heavily modify the engine at first, other mod teams do this and without extensive experience PR simply cannot compete

Callahan, nice passion, but check the names of the PR:Arma developers before rushing to judgement, as well, you're wrong. They are not bf2 guys fumbling about in the Arma engine.....most of them have been modding since OFP1 and have contributed an awful lot to the Arma community. They know the engine as well as anyone and will be doing their best to bend it to their will from the outset.

The engine is used for simulation but ArmA2 itself is an entertainment product.

You can shoot from the first person perspective so therefore it's an FPS.

BTW PR2's C4 engine is also used for simulation:

"Companies such as Lockheed Martin use the C4 Engine to create “serious” games that serve more important purposes than entertainment."

You've been keeping this quiet (or I haven't looked hard enough)

I'm going to have to buy ArmA2 now :( (and probably get a new processor in order to play it)

If anyone can salvage ArmA's horrible, unplayable user interface, it's the team here. Hope it comes out good!

This statement exemplifies EXACTLY why publishers should support and release mod tools. Modders help sell their game.
Realism and fun aren't mutually exclusive.

I never bothered to play arma again after it crashed half way through the campaign and deleted all my progress and I played the MP once and was pretty disgusted at the lack of anything good. But by some divine intervention I didnt un-install it, I now know why......................This is gonna be A R M A Z I N G, see what I did there < ?

And yes I played ofp1 and arma1 like a madman.

Just imagine if the PR crew had the budget of EA or some mainstream company...........
Imagine!

Callaghan I understand your love for ARMA II but even though you probably aren't intending to, most of your posts seem pretty hostile towards the PR community... Your still talking to people who deeply care for the current PR.

Will this make ARMA 2 run smoother in general? Or will it just be a few mods?

Callaghan wrote:I have been a member of the OFp/Arma community since day one, almost ten years ago; I have also been playing BF2 and PR since their release so without meaning to sound arrogant I think I can give a fair and balanced opinion before those who merely bought arma 2 release version and dropped it after that.

I have noticed several people with little to no Arma experience commenting here on what they make of it, some of their comments grounded in no more than the release or demo version with all its bugs and flaws. The simple fact is, that if you didnt play ofp/arma1 extensively and then just tried arma 2 for a short while then you never really understood the game to begin with, nor the very unique relationship between developer and community that we have, and were probably not mature or patient enough to exact the rewards from it that so many of us get once the real time is invested.

I noticed someone saying something like 'I hope the Arma 2 community gets the PR concept or it will give it a bad name'. I wasn't sure whether to be amused or annoyed by this, I dont know how many of you know, but the average Arma gamer that plays as part of a squad/clan is generally older and more mature than your average PR gamer, I say this from extensive experience. In addition, it is more likely that the PR community will have to conform to the INCREDIBLY demanding nature of the Arma community, we strive for realism like no other. Remember BF2 was an arcade shooter, Arma 2 was a military simulator (not an FPS like some here seem to think) from the outset, and is actually used by NATO forces for training world over. Add to that the fact that ArmA has the most active, supportive and exciting mod community for any game out there, and it makes me kinda sad that so many of you realism/teamwork fanatics missed out on something so wonderful for so long. Yes, PR should bring something good to ArmA, but honestly if you are looking for a highly improved arma engine then what you want to try is ACE mod 2.0. It makes BFPR look like BC1, no joke, the level of detail is pretty much overwhelming. But hey, dont take my word for it or just take a fanboi stance and flame me, try it for yourself.

So yes, as an Arma/PR gamer I will be trying this mod, but mostly because it offers some very nice British equipment. PR is new to arma and it will take them a long time to get to the same skill level as many of the other mod teams; DO NOT expect PR to heavily modify the engine at first, other mod teams do this and without extensive experience PR simply cannot compete - the engine will however give them much more freedom than BF2 could, as well as the opportunity for much higher quality models and textures than BF2 can support (as you can see in any arma2 screen) so I look forward to seeing what they can bring to the table.

I didn't post this to provoke, or to put down PR fans, it just angers me (as someone who has seen both sides) to see such ignorance expressed with such zeal as if it were a given truth. Comments like 'I get bored of most other FPS in 5 mins' or 'I prob wont even play arma 2 I just want this mod' are simply incredibly ignorant of the nature of arma 2 and its already enormous and very proud community. So I implore you, those new to arma 2, leave your preconceptions at the door, and try ACE mod 2.0 at the very least (if not 5-6 other mods too) before commenting on something beyond PR. I promise you, if you try ace and find a good server (look for a realism clan such as 1st infantry, 10th or 20th SFG etc.) join their TS and you will find realistic combined arms combat on a scale that BFPR could never have dreamed of and will be forced to eat your collective hats. Remember that Arma 2 is wonderful because if you don't like something, you can change it; complaints about the 'sounds' or 'fx' are simply void arguments, as there are already a ridiculous number of very high quality replacement packs for pretty much every aspect of the game, no other game has this much free content, simple as.

Anyway, welcome to the best damn gaming community in the world, its good to have you all onboard.

I' afraid you miss the whole point of why PR is so popular.. it's not one single thing as you kept describing which was "realism". most PR users prefer a more balanced approach meaning we do expect a level of realism but we do not want to be "working" a simulator, we want to be "playing" a game which is based around realism and teamwork but most of all we want PVP! this is something the current mods haven't been able to successfully achieve, PR on the other hand has the correct vision to achieve this.

I don't understand why some in the arma2 community feel threatened by PR.

Wow this looks too good to pass up but I dont have the money currently to buy ArmA II. I got ArmA I but the game would not run, it would lag no matter what setting I had it on so it was a waste of 50 bucks :/ I am reluctant to buy ArmA II cause of that reason.

About ARMA2 for people trying to run/purchase it, these days, the demo is a VERY bad representation of how ARMA2 runs these days, the patches have much improved how it runs/functions. For things like patches, as long as you have the "official" patches when they are released things will be all good, beta patches can be installed and play wont be affected, the game will just not use the beta patch data for multiplayer.

In terms of porting some models back to BF2 then unfortunately any stuff that was made by BIS can't be put into BF2 :P R (against EULA of mod tools and so on...) stuff we have made (like the SA80 RIS) can be (legally) whether it will be or not is up to BF2 :P R.
Will the mod compatible ARMA 2 - Operation Arrowhead (datadisc) ?
There are no issues with compatability as far as I know, once installed, OP:A should run fine with PR on it.

Alot of the questions about 3rd person and crosshairs and this that and the other are by DEFAULT optional in ARMA, veteran mode pretty much turns it all of anyway. Our mod will not remove 3rd person view. The server can choose if they have it on or not anyway.

This sounds awesome, but the news update was very unclear about the features of the mod.
What will the gameplay be like? Like in PR? Attacking, defending flags, building FOBs etc?

What will the player cap be?
