Why isn't such render distances achievable in normal PR?

Mainly because the map doesn't use normal BF2 terrain and instead uses "Mesh Terrain", which is basically a massive static mesh / building. This dose have serious disadvantages like non-blending detail textures, loss of undergrowth (grass) and things like that but the big advantages are that you can for starters, have massive terrain like the Falklands have that isn't limited to 4km, and you can also have a lot more control on the optimization of the terrain which in turn, if optimized well can allow you to have a much larger VD, 3kms being the max on BF2 thou, which the map is :p

Thanks, I've always wondered this. It sounds amazing too. Can't wait for Falklands to come out, and good luck! :D

Why not make it a lower view distance and have (even) better performance?

This map is largely a jet map, not entirely but largely, and the larger the VD the better jet combat you get, in both terms of Air to Air and Surface to Air. Being able to see your enemy well before your in engagement range opens the door to loads of tactics etc unlike most other PR Jet maps which is mainly a matter of hopefully stumbling on the enemy in the fog and who ever gets the first shot off normally wins...

Lowering the VD will just make the jet combat worse and take away one of the massive features of this map which is also awesome for the guys fighting on the ground too.

If players have issues with performance, which in past releases not even low gfx users did, they can reduce their VD % in their video settings if they really want to lower the VD just for themselves.

If anyone manages to kill a jet with the blowpipe, I hope they upload it to Youtube

It really depends on the conditions to how hard it is. If the Jet is flying towards or away from you in a straight line its really, really easy. The really hard thing is engaging a jet crossing you, but again with enough practice you can do that too as its really a matter of getting to know how much lead you need to give the missile etc. Since the jet your engaging doesn't get any warning that its been targeted too, its normally quire easy to predict its movements unless its aware of a SAM down there, which for the Blowpipe isn't likley but good pilots will probably quickly learn to do evasive manurers the entire time while flying over the islands :p

Here is the first initial POC test video of CLOS SAMs using the blowpipe and we where testing all types of firing techniques and targets, which is why most of them are misses since we where engaging targets crossing us at extreme range and speeds etc which I probably wouldn't risk a blowpipe missile on ingame, Tigercat I would since it has 3 rounds, although since that video we have improved the CLOS SAM guidance code loads, and the blowpipe itself with bigger reticle etc so its much easier to acquire and engage the targets than in this video :)
It dose take a little bit of time to get use to, but once your use to it you may not want to go back to normal lock on guidance in many cases. Your also better off starting off on the Tigercat SAM to learn how to use CLOS SAMs since it has 3 missiles, which are also slower (giving you more time to correct your aim), are more powerful with larger explosion radius and has a much easier view to identify and engage your target with :)

And before you say that it was done back on 0.98, remember that Falklands and Normandy, have been removed in order to be fully re-worked in order to match 1.0 standards.

Also remember the Falklands doesn't have a proper team working on it, it's being made mostly by the community.

I wouldn't say that it would come on something such as 1.1, Falklands will be available on the updater as soon as it's done, I think.

I am very much looking forward to playing this Falklands 'add-on'. This period of history is sadly overlooked in games, although, in my opinion, it lends itself to a game like this one. The scale, the combination of air superiority, naval warfare and infantry Engagements on the Islands themselves.

Can anyone tell me how to make the 'Falklands minimod' work with the current version of Project Reality? The last time I have played was, I think, in version .95 or something along these lines.

Not sure if there is a way with the current patch, that's the big reason this and ww2 were temporally removed from the mod, as they needed updates when pr hit 1.0, Rhino may know but I think they only way to play it is to use whatever version of pr it was available on last.

Then why aren't we going back to that version? Not to be unreasonable, but at least periodical events would be more than necessary.

Perhaps we should have a vote by the local population on what they want the name to be?

:D
