Re: [Tutorial] How to make awsome maps with DEM and GEO2 [IMG HEAVY!]]
This is what I did:
Get your TIF image in photoshop, resize to 1024.
Go to image>mode>greyscale and image>mode>16 bit
Save as raw
Open again, set channels to one and set it to 16 bit and IBM pc.
Resize to 1025 and save.
Not sure if this is exactly right, I'm at school now so when I get home i'll edit this if need be.

Nope did not work. Did what you said cant re size to 1025 but i re sized to 1024 but when i put it into GEOControl the image came out all spike looking. SO I guess take a look when you get home would be great. Thanks for trying to help me out.
PS.
Sorry for being so rude last night to the guy who posted this thread I was angry that I spent so much time trying to figure it out.

Are you resizing it once you open it ore are you resizing in the photoshop RAW options dialogue (pops up when you open the file). If I remember it right you should first open it then resize it.
And if it gives you the error that It can't open the file because its to large does it say there are 2 channels our does it say that there's only one channel in the RAW options dialogue. If so you should change your channels from 1 to 2 in you original file.
If that doesn't work post your file then I will take a look at it.

I fixed the file opening by changing the mode of the original 1024x1024 file to 16 bits by going to Image -> Mode -> 16 Bits/channel.
I believe the strange results in Geocontrol are do to the original heightmap. You should try too smooth it out a bit.
I packed the Heightmap resized to 1025x1025.

Re: [Tutorial] How to make awsome maps with DEM and GEO2 [IMG HEAVY!]]
I managed to get to the geocontrol step. But it seems my export out of photoshop or microdim failed.
I don't use Google data since it was very low detail. I use another source that works just fine. My location I want to use is on the middle of to tiles so what I did:
-Open both DEM's in Microdem, make them greyscale and export to geotiff.
-Merge them in photoshop and export as 16bit RAW.
-open in Photoshop.
this is the result:
http://www.schoollife.nl/upload/images/error.bmp
It always only works for the right tile. I use the exact same steps for both DEM's. So weird.
edit: I'll try it back from the beginning by redownloading my DEM sources. I really want to use these ones cause they are so detailed.

Well you can use levels tool in photoshop on the left one, and make it less spiky? It looks like the source is too streched. I am just guessing..

Re: [Tutorial] How to make awsome maps with DEM and GEO2 [IMG HEAVY!]]
well, I can try to do that. But what settings do I use to save my geotiff file in photoshop to open them again in MICRODEM? Since none of them seem to work.
edit: it seems the left source file is just fucked. I might just use the right one and map the rest with bf2 editor. Since 80% of my map is on the right side.

Re: [Tutorial] How to make awsome maps with DEM and GEO2 [IMG HEAVY!]]
yeah. Like I stated, if I compare the both tiles in MICRODEM I can see the difference in height.
You can see it here, by the difference of color.
Changes the levels should work, but I can't open a changed TIFF file in microdem
I'm going to try to work from this:
and create the rest myself.

I made a small seperate tutorial for the photoshop part of this for a friend, it explains every step of the way to make it without that error:

might be helpful.

Should I use this tut? I'm making a map that has some good mountainious terrain in it, so I'm looking for the best way to use real life terrain data of the area and model it like shown here.
Also it got to be impossible to find the terrain you want through MicroDem if it's not near the shore, because you have no way of telling where the terrain surrounding a city inland is located

You use google earth to find your locationPvt.LHeureux wrote:Should I use this tut? I'm making a map that has some good mountainious terrain in it, so I'm looking for the best way to use real life terrain data of the area and model it like shown here.

Microdem uses the same coordinates as google earth so you can find your terrain that wayPvt.LHeureux wrote:Should I use this tut? I'm making a map that has some good mountainious terrain in it, so I'm looking for the best way to use real life terrain data of the area and model it like shown here.

Yeah I know that, what I mean is that it is hard to find which place in MicroDem is the place I'm looking for in Google Earth.
