I ended up with 150 lightmap atlases, after I reduced the size of the lightmaps for the dest_houses I got it down to 133 but I still got the pavements left to lightmap..

Is 150 the max amount of lightmap atlases or was it just a coincidence that I got that number and are there more ways to optimize it?

150 is waaay to much I believe. I don't know any map having that many. You'll need to do it in 3dsmax and optimize it manually by setting the sizes by hand.

Yep, should aim for around 30. You might be able to just do a batch resize on them in ps.

I did resize all of the destroyed version of the small houses, I don't know if I can resize others aswell..

Does someone know if it takes a long time to learn 3dsmax lightmapping? I'm on my last drops of motivation for this map and everything that comes with it...

Any chance someone would like to help me with the lightmaps?? The map is done apart from lightmaps..

Tbh, if you have 150 atlases, I guess you also have overreached a bit on static count. Might want to cut down on it if in anyway possible. Judging by the minimap 80% of the statics is in the center of the map. Which I think will be a very big hit on performance. Although I'm guessing largest part of the lightmaps went to all the russian apartments. You will have to downsize their lightmaps quite a lot. So that might very well also explain the huge amount of atlases.

Learning the method of 3dsmax lightmapping isn't hard at all as it's all written down in tutorials. But the process itself can take quite a while.

Do you mean resize them with photoshop like I did with the small houses or make new samples for them and re-lightmap?

Resize them with PS, just check the results.

BTW in most cases generating a LM in high rez, then resizing it down with PS can give better results than just generating it in small to start with, but it dose take a lot longer :p

Alright so for example:
[rus_apt_v2_var1=00=-2=33=161] is 1024x1024 and 682 kB, should I try to resize them all in ps to 512x512 and see how it looks?

And should I do it to all the different lightmaps for an object (rus_apt_v2_var1=00=-2=33=161, rus_apt_v2_var1=01=-2=33=161, rus_apt_v2_var1=02=-2=33=161 etc)?

=00=; =01=; =02= means the different lods so yeah you need to do them or the lightmaps wont show up ingame.

though 1024 is far to big for this appartment building

Alright so do you think 512x512 is a good starting point to try?

depends on how many buildings you have on your map if you have like 10 of them yeah go with 512 if you have more then 10 you should aim for sth lower

thanks guys, here is the result:
I decreased all lightmaps by 2 steps so, [1024x1024 > 256x256], [512x512 > 128x128] etc.
Does this mean I decreased them too much? The biggest files went from like 660kB to 22kB..
Image
EDIT: I also tried to only reduce 1 step, 1024x1024 > 512x512 etc but looks about the same...
Maybe I missunderstood something but this is how I did:
I set up the record/batch action in photoshop, everything seems to work so far it automates the process and all files(the lightmaps files that I first generated with the editor) seem to turn out like they should, I save them with these settings:
Image

After I reduced the size of all the files I copy them to the lightmaps/objects folder and start the editor..
Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong:/

Complex enterables like apartments will want a resolution of 512x512 imo at least,

128x128 is what I'd use for a small non enterable house

I tried that aswell, I did it like this:
lod 00: 512x512 from: 1024x1024
lod 01: 256x256 from: 512x512
lod 02: 128x128 from: 256x256
lod 03: 64x64 from: 128x128

Should they all be the same size?

Ofcouse not :D That's the point of having lods and smaller texture sizes :) Did you re-render your atlas files?

Not yet, I just checked it in the editor. I tried earlier with the hotel to also try it ingame with atlases but it was still f-ed up so I didn't bother now.. Do you think it could give me a different result?

I think I found the problem.. This is how the the files look after the automate/batch process... Even though I set Image size to 512 in both width and height, I get this..When the automate process is on I get a short glimpse of the new pictures and there it looks ok like a square, but when I open the new files they look like this... does someone know what I'm doing wrong?

EDIT: The only thing I do different than the tutorials is use "Save As" instead of "Save for Web & Devices", that's the only way I can save them as dds files.. And it happens also when I just resize one image manually, I save it as 512x512 and when I open the new file it's 256x512..

You should have "Generate Mips" selected.

Can you share your batch action script? Maybe an error in there.

Yes! It works now after I chose "generate MIP maps", thanks :)
