PR goes dark

I load up BF2 Vanilla and other games like BF3 fine.

Load up PR and FH2(only BF2 mods I play) and then it turns my screen all black. I try ctrl-alt-delete, turn off monitor and back on, scan for virus with ESET, disable firewall, replug HDMI cord, restart. I haven't been able to play PR or FH2 for a month now so I've been playing a lot of LoL but I felt like I needed to get my fix for PR and finally put a thread up. Any suggestions? When it goes dark I mean it goes dark for good. Ctrl-alt-delete doesnt show. I can hear the game sound in headset still and hear my mouse going over some of the buttons but I just cant see it. Also when I manually power off my PC and turn it back on it also goes dark throughout whole startup but I can still hear the Windows load sound. So I have to manually turn off, I wait a minute to be safe and let it back on. Sometimes it takes 3-5 tries other times it'll work and screen will be normal.

So what youre saying is that your monitor goes to standby sometimes and you cant turn it back on?

Are you using nVidia graphic card, is your card overheating, check power connections to GPU and how old/powerful is your PSU?

Finally post your specs, along with OS version, and check if all cords are properly seated, also check your desktop and game screen refresh rates. If using LCD it must not be over 60Hz.

I think so. But I don't know how to check for all these things.

i7 2600k
8 GB RAM
Corsair 650TX PSU
GTX 580
1TB RAM

I never go "standby" besides when I load PR or FH2 up though. How can I check my game screen refresh rates along with my desktop? Cords properly seated as in if they are all in the right ones? I think so my uncle who is some computer 101 IT guy helped me put my parts together.

Hello,
you can manually change your resolution and refresh rate in the config file,... like so:

[R-COM]LITOralis.nMd;1719097 wrote:Enjoy the new monitor

4 ways to fix this:

1.

Go to Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles , each profile you have has a separate folder, 0001, 0002, etc.
Open global.con and see which is your default profile and make note.
Mine:
Quote: GlobalSettings.setDefaultUser "0004"

Close global.con
Open the appropriate folder.
Open Video.con
go to line #9
Mine:
Quote: VideoSettings.setResolution 1920x1080@60Hz

Adjust to your settings, idk your correct refresh rate,
to look it up, right click desktop, Select Screen resolution, Click Advanced settings.

Click the Monitor tab, and then look under Screen refresh rate,

2.
Create a shortcut for PR on your desktop. Either make a copy of your current one, or find the pr.exe file and right click->send to desktop.

Right click the new shortcut icon... add this string to the end after the pr.exe"
Quote: +restart +szx 1920 +szy 1080

Mine is:

Quote: "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe"+restart +szx 1920 +szy 1080

note where the quotation marks are located, they must be there.

3. Third way is to delete the Profiles folder, but don't do that if you don't know or can't retrieve your BF2 log-in password.

4. Fourth way is to create a batch file on desktop...

Quote: @echo off
start "" "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" +restart +szx 1920 +szy 1080
exit

save the batch file and use the batch file to run PR.

Also, you might try to underclock your GPU before loading PR or FH2 jsut to see if you have a power spike pulling more volts off the 12v rail than your PSU can supply at that moment.

As you probably have noticed, when you first start PR your GPU winds up for a moment before the splash screen appears, my hypothesis is your PSU can't supply enough power to your GPU at that very moment, and is causing the GPU to shutdown, hence the black screen.

Underclock as much as possible to see if you can lower the power draw. This is just a test , not a solution.

If I was to buy a new PSU which should I get? Would a 750 e enough to always run stable? Thanks!

We are not sure yet it is a hardware issue,
first thing first, turn off your PC, unplug the power cable and video cable, try to ground yourself by touching some metal, open up your PC and remove the GTX 580, then reseat it., then make sure the two power cables connecting to the GPU are securely in place.

Keep the side panel off, reconnect your power and video cables, and boot the PC, try to start PR, when you start PR, keep an ear and eye open for your GPU fan, see if it winds up real fast then completely turns off just as your screen turns off.

Here are some pics of what I'm talking about with the gpu power cable (not trying to be pedantic, just for reference):

Are you, or do you intend to overclock that 2600k?
IF you are OC'ing the i7-2600k right now you probably have overextended your PSU's ability to send Amps to the 12v rails.

That will be determining factor in your PSU purchase decision.

New PSU recommendation:
no cpu OC:750W
cpu OC: 850W or higher.
Minimum 23Amp on main rails. 25 is better.
80 Plus certified, (silver, gold, whatever your price point is)
GO to Guru3d and figure out the power draw of your PC, you want to find a PSU that has a high efficiency rating at the gaming activity power draw.

There are quite a few quality choices, with the money you've invested already in the system, IMHO don't cheap out on the PSU.

The PR shortcut fixed it. Would I do the same for FH2? So I don't need a new PSU right? I actually didn't spend all that much money on this comp. I got my 580 for free and my 2600k for 150 brand new from relatives who work at Intel, EVGA, etc. :P But originally my comp had a 460 but then my aunt told me to get a 580, I worried about my power supply not being able to handle it at first too but it ran Crysis fine at max. Whats the max Celsius my GPU should be at when I'm hardcore gaming? I'm guessing PR is GPU heavy because of the map size? Is there a tool where I can control the fan as in once the GPU reaches a certain temperature it automatically makes my fan go faster? Thanks a bunch!

PS. I'm guessing I would do the same for FH2?

lol :-D
1TB HD

but 650 W should be just enough to power that set up although you are pushing it

I suggest you try the same thin with FH2 and see if it works

FH2 worked through the same way. Odd though because Alpha Project runs without me needing the shortcut. Is this because FH2 and PR have huge maps compared to BF2 vanilla and Alpha Project?
Thanks!
