Slow and inconsistent wireless connection

Post by saXoni »

Hey guys,

My desktop's Wi-Fi connection has never been any good, and I've had a bridge connected from my desktop to laptop and used my laptop's wireless connection as it's a lot more stable.
I'm getting pretty sick of having to turn my laptop on every time I'm going to use my desktop, and I'm pretty much wasting electricity.

If I do use my desktop's connection I will get connection problems for 5-10 seconds on a regular basis, so I need your help to fix this. What do I need? I was thinking of a new Wi-Fi adapter or something like that, but I'm not too certain about what I need for my type of network and computer.

If you could tell me what to do/what to get that'd be much appreciated!

Tell me if you need more information about my internet-connection, I'll add my specs;
Operating System
MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

CPU
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.80GHz
Wolfdale 45nm Technology

RAM
4.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 399MHz [5-5-5-18]

Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5QPL-AM (LGA775)

Graphics
BenQ G2420HDB (1920x1080@60Hz)
LEN L193pC (1280x1024@60Hz)
ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series

Hard Drives
488GB Seagate ST3500418AS ATA Device (SATA)

Optical Drives
ATAPI iHAS124 Y ATA Device

Thank you,

Having a cable running through the house isn't an option.

If every regular PC comes with a PCIE slot then I do have one, otherwise I have no idea.

Okay. Anything cheaper than $35 bucks that might do the same trick? Thanks for your help by the way.

Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, Networking, Wireless Networking, Wireless Adapters, $10 - $25, PCI Express

any of these will do, but check wireless data rates(higher is better) and security protocols(look for WPA2).

My download speed is 12.10 Mbps, and my upload speed is just below 5 Mbps, does that mean if I purchase an adapter that has a wireless data rate of 150 Mbps I will not have any issues with speed considering 12.05 is nowhere close of it's limit?

Will this one do the trick?

Free international shipping or just domestic? I'm not too interested in paying another 20 bucks plus another $6000 for the postage in Norway...

Have you personally bought stuff from that website?

i personally have not but i know of a lot of people that have. if you wish for certain free shipping find a "guam" based site and order something similar there :)

also you dont need to run a cable across the house. just drill holes where needed and run the cable on the edge between walls and ceiling :) abit more work for overall better expirience. and it would be cheaper, since net cables are perversly cheap

My room is directly below the router, but the walls aren't aligned, so if I drill a hole against the wall here it will come up 30 centimeters out from the wall upstairs, and the rest of my family would turn absolutely mental.

I'll check some other websites for the same adapter, thank you very much for your help.

no problem. also it doesnt need to be the same.

three things to look at mainly:
has to be PCIe-x1
more bandwith the better
sacurity to be WPA2

for the cable:
i see... :( poor you

Are USB adapters worth it? Found this one, is it in principle the same as the other one I found?
- Transfer rate: 150Mbps
- Supports WEP64/128/WPA/WPA2/802.X encryption
- Supports WPA/WPA2/WMM/WMM-PS/WHQL/Cisco CCX/USB-IF/CE/Rohs
Or this one? It says PCI-E, but not x1, so would that be the wrong type?

not exactly fond of USB stuff myself. the other one should be good :)

USB has one pro though, its easier to just take out and put in a diffrent PC if the need arises, which doesnt really cover the cons of speed and seamless integration for me yet. maybe with usb 3.0 it will be better :)

if i were you id go with the PCI-E one you posted.

*disclaimer*
just in case something goes wrong i take no responsibility ;)
(shouldnt go wrong anyway)

Good luck and post back

Hey there,

Sax just go to amazon (co.uk) I'm pretty sure they do ship to guam (norway lol :) and shipping will be most probably free. (juts select - eligible for free delivery option on the left tab)

Newegg does not ship outside of US anyways.

PS - As I'm moving to a new property myself tomorrow and in the same boat. Cable will be no option for my desktop and I'm looking at PCi-e wireless card myself.

Was almost set on THIS D LINK but Doc's suggestion come cheaper and reviews looks better. Ty by the way ;)

Also, if I can recommend, leave your desktop (with whatever wireless adapter) kind of in the open. It's not recommended to put your PC next to a wall and barricade it from all sides as the wireless needs ''breathing room''.

So I got my '11N PCI E300M Wireless Card' yesterday and it seems to be working fine. Thanks for your help Doc.

My computer is right next to the wall, with the wireless card facing it. It doesn't seem to be a problem now, but if it becomes a problem I'll try to move it around a bit. Thanks for your advice Bee.

Instead of creating a new thread I'll use this one instead.

Last night was very windy and I suspect the wind to have fucked up my internet connection. Web browsers, Teamspeak and Mumble works fine, but PR does not - at all. I'm not getting any message saying there's a problem with my connection, but my ping is constantly spiking up to around 500 which makes it impossible to play.

I was thinking this would stop when the wind did, but right now there's no wind outside but the condition of my internet is the same. Anything I can do from my computer to fix this or would I have to call someone to come check it out?

Thanks,
saX.
