Malware - ArmA 2 CD-key stealer

Post by NyteMyre »

So, i trusted a guy with a DayZ Taviana install file (a .exe, should have known), and it was a CD key stealer. I thought (or hoped) my anti-virus stopped it from executing since all it's alarm bells went off and that i was fine, but now 2 months later, I got globally banned on BattleEye. Most likely because of the stolen CD key.

My stupid mistake, shit happens ect. ect.

Anyway, since its 50% off on Steam right now i'm willing to rebuy it. However, i am afraid that the malicious cd-key stealer is still active and that i'll be losing the key again if i install a new copy via Steam.

Anyone knows if this is the case? Or can i reinstall it safely?

Re: ArmA2 - CD key stolen, reinstall question

Post by Deadfast »

You can safely purchase the game on Steam as long as you don't download it (since the registry key holding the CD key won't be written till then). A better question would be "do I still have malware on my computer?" which is why I'll move the thread to General Tech Support.

For your malware issues, downloading, running and pasting the log from HijackThis here would be a good start.

Wait, what exactly do you mean with "don't download it" ?
I uninstalled my retail version of ArmA2 and was planning to install the Steam version, which i have to download then ofcourse

Purchase the game on Steam so that you don't miss out on the sale but don't install it yet.

EDIT: As long as you intentionally set plusnetwork.com as your search provider in IE I can't see anything suspicious. You should be clean.

I think the plusnetwork comes with Messenger Plus which i use on MSN and is pretty sneaky hidden in the installer. But i don't use IE at all....

Also did a Regcleaner to remove a ton of invalid keys that were lerking in my system.

Some general advice:

A lot of "free" software installs browser addons (toolbars or search providers).
  • Always do custom installs, not automatic/typical
  • Always read what's on your screen, and choose the options accordingly
You should control what gets installed on your computer. Nobody else.

Also - if you have UAT enabled (it's pretty dumb to disable it, tbh), ensure you understand what's going on when it prompts you for approval.
