Quick question about lag / BF2 / hamachi / Steam

Perhaps somebody here has an idea. I'd rather get this fixed fast, hence the thread. I WILL eventually figure it out on my own, probably, but why not use the combined knowledge of the internet to get it done faster?

So, everything worked fine before.

Now, new computer. I'm on WLAN (sadly), using an USB device. 300 to 500 KB/s down, usually, fair enough, considering I'm on WLAN on a crappy connection. Used to have 200 with my old PC. Ping of 100 max when doing ping tests to relatively close servers.

I just tried to play with somebody via hamachi. I had running: Avast, Steam, BF2/PR (via Steam), Skype for VoIP (we were in singleplayer and Skype has superior quality to ingame voip and I use it with that person a lot, but we could also use mumble if that matters) and hamachi.

Pinging via hamachi prior to starting PR: 89ms 90% of the time, rarely over 100.
Upon starting the game, even when the flash screen pops up, the ping goes up to 400. It stays that way. Not only for hamachi, my voice lags in Skype, too.

I can play online games without problem on this computer, normally. Just played Planetside 2 all day, no lag at all.

Now I need to find out what is causing it. My first step is installing BF2 without Steam to get rid of Steam. I dislike Steam. Steam is annoying.

If that does not work, I'll replace Skype with Mumble.

If that does not work, I'll replace hamachi with tunngle.

Any other ideas?

(I am currently waiting for the 1.5 patch to finish downloading, already installed a CD copy of BF2).

Oh well. Nevermind, then. 'twas Steam. Works perfectly fine without. No idea why.

maybe auto update was turned on on steam you were probably downloading updates for your other games

Skype started lagging the instant I started BF2 (slash screen), and my ping in hamachi went from 100 to 600 around the same time. I also have no other Steam game on this computer (the only other game I have registered on Steam is Skyrim, which I haven't downloaded here). Oh well. Haven't had the problem again, since I installed a physical copy of BF2, so whatever it was, it's gone now.
