[Texture] British 1968 DPM Camo (PR:F) [WIP]

Post by CTRifle »

Hey all, working on the player skins for the Brits for Falklands as atm they are using the GB stuff with a small camo tweak instead of the real thing, ill update this post whenever I have more but atm I have the most common uniform (close) done.

Feedback to make them look better/realistic is much appreciated!

Heres it so far (id throw on some geoms but I have no idea how to view both together) Keep in mind this is one of a few variants Ill be making, but this seems to me the most common

Looking good, although think the black bits could be a bit blacker and more apparent and same for the yellow, but more yellow?

Also some refs for others to help with the feedback, keeping in mind their are a few different types of camo here and some may not have been used in the Falklands:
Spoiler for refs:

You could move the texture around a little so you get texture seams whenever two parts of fabric are sewn together. Like where a sleeve joins the main body, or where the buttons are on the front.

Also looks like the pattern on Rhino's refs has the spots a bit bigger, if you understand me.

Hopefully in time but that requires new kit geoms to be made, which is another task from re-skinning the solider models and current kit geoms.

After they are modelled I don't see why not, I don't think they need a retexture atm unless I missed it

@Feedbakers ;)

I dont think Im doing to change the size of the camo, but I will tweak the color and see how that goes.

Would be best showing he main ref(s) your working on for this camo so we can see where your coming from and ideally the current kit geoms need a reskin with the new camo too until the new ones get made which might be some time.

So the berets we had in v0.8 or so for Brit SLs, they're a no-go as placeholder?

They wouldn't fit the current soldiers.

From what I see in the screens, I suggest adding a few minor tears in some of the seams and a LOT of mud. Those guys slept in some nasty trenches- their uniform has had quite a few chances to get a little roughed up.
imo the fabric could also use a bit of work. Having 2 layers for my fabrics in the past has helped a lot, one multiplied, and one with the screen filter (idk if you're using photoshop or not). It may also need some noise and sharpening to it. Sometimes I like to smudge smaller areas of fabric too and leave the noise overlay before I merge my fabric layers and sharpen- for some reason it looks a little more realistic.
as for the camo, I think that's been covered. It looks a little dark, but from the reference images, that seems to be historically accurate. I hope this little bit of feedback helps :)

Oh, 1 more idea-I don't know much about the kit geoms- but I'm sure you could work the berets into some unneeded UV space in the original geometries. Would require a whole lot less texture work. Again, I don't know that much when it comes to working with kit geometries...

Yes I'm using PS, do you have any examples of what your talking about? For the berets, it'll have to wait until new geoms are made. I'll post some refs when I get home.

Is this a good example? You probably want to zoom in on it, I made the fabric lines pretty thin...
Using different pieces of your camo layer at different points allows the eye to better make out the image over the camouflage, making your texture appear sharper than it actually is. idk if you already did that or not

The more refs the better, can never have too many refs (says the man who has an Afghan ref folder with ~35k files in it and spends a few hrs before doing any work shifting though finding the right images to work from) :D
