Time for a new Mouse, again...

Hey guys,

My current mouse, the Mad Catz M.M.O.7 is dying with the MMB not always recognising its being pressed any more, and I'm looking for a bit of advice on a new mouse :)

TBH I never liked the MMO7 much. One of the main reasons I got it was for its "Horizontal Scroll Wheel", which turned out not only was it in such a bad location that you couldn't use it as one, but it didn't even function as one...
Image
The mouse I had before the MMO7 was the M$ SideWinder X8 which I surprisingly liked, with its feel, its speed, its wireless/cable hybrid (not too worried about that but a bonus) but the thing I liked most of all about it was its profiling software which would (most of the time), change the profile the mouse was running depending on what application/game was running, without having to change though profiles or modes.
Image
This is the thing I mostly didn't like about the MMO7, while its profiling software dose allow you to do quite a lot if your willing to put the time in making your own profiles etc, it doesn't automatically change based on what your running and you have three modes per profile you can manually switch though, but when your hopping between 3DsMax, the BF2 Editor, Photoshop etc the entire time, changing the modes as you go is really bad for me, and then having to remember to apply the correct profile before you open the game otherwise you need to alt tab when your switch to nades buttons isn't working :p

But the Sidewinder X8 did have one significant problem for me, not anywhere near enough buttons for me as I like to be able to, using 3DsMax as one example, have buttons for switching between selection, move, rotate, possibly scale, changing in and out of wireframe to and edged frame modes (two sets of buttons there) and as many more functions on top of that as possible too, peripherally turning snapping on and off, switching snapping modes etc.
This was the second reason why I got the MM7 since it had quite a lot of buttons, but the main problem with the MMO7 is that most of its buttons are not really easy to use, mainly the HAT switch buttons.

While the MMO7 was quite a good mouse, the only thing I really liked about it was its "Precision Aim" function button which when pressed, would drastically slow down the movement rate of the mouse, NOT though changing DPI, but though slowing down the cursor movement rate, which allows for a hell of a lot more accurate aiming/movement than just turning down the DPI as every dot is still being picked up, just moving at a much, much slower rate. Although TBH I mainly only really used this feature in FPS games, it did come in useful too while modelling etc. Unfortunately from what I can tell not many mice have this feature out there so I'm not too fussed if one can't be found with it, but it would be really good if it had one.

One really bad point about the MMO7 is that in some cases, the cursor would move slightly when ever you pressed a button, including the LMB.... Never had a mouse do this before but ye, was one really big thing I disliked about the MMO7 and don't want on any future mouse...

I also have a pretty large hand, from my wrist to the end of my middle finger its 190mm long and my hand width, at the base of my fingers not including my thumb is 90mm wide, and I generally hold my mouse with my index finger on the LMB, middle finger on the RMB with it going over to the MMB/Scroll wheel if I need to, and the two fingers on the right including the pinkie sitting down the side of the mouse. So ye, ideally want quite a large mouse.

Also another thing that's just came to mind, another thing that I've found seriously bad about the MMO7, was how it dealt with cat hair... I've got four cats in my house and one spends 90% of her time in my room, and she malts a hell of a lot, w/e the weather and insists on being fussed in front of my keyboard. This leads to the odd bit of cat hair straying onto my mouse pad and while most mice I've had over the years, haven't had a massive problem with this, the MMO7 totally freaks out and stops working, even if there is no visible cat hair around...
So ye, I know this isn't a feature printed on the box but if anyone knows if any mice can cope with the odd bit of cat hair going on the mouse pad, it would really be worth mentioning! :D

So ye to summarise, the main features I'm really looking for in a mouse:
  • Large Mouse
  • Lots of, Easy to Reach, Programmable Buttons
  • Decent software that preferably changes profiles based on the current active application/game/.exe
  • Horizontal Scroll, either though a wheel tilt or an easy to use horizontal scroll wheel that works
  • Preferably a "Precision Aim" function/button
  • Decent build quality, want a good mouse to last a long time, especially if I'm paying a lot for it
  • Doesn't brake down when it meets a strand of cat hair on the mouse pad...
  • Cursor shouldn't move when you press a button, mainly the LMB
As for the Price Range I'm looking for, generally the cheaper the better but I would prefer to fork out a little extra than to buy something that isn't right for me.

Currently the best mouse I've seen is the Logitech G700s which seems to have most of these features, although possibly not quite enough buttons as I would like but from what I've read, all its buttons are easy to reach which is better than lots of ones which you can't reach.
Image

But ye, any suggestions/advice on any other Mice I haven't seen would be really welcome as I don't want to buy another mouse which isn't quite what I wanted which was the case with the MMO7.

Cheers!

Hey Rhino, you should check out the Perixx MX mouse series or the Corsair M60/M95 series.

I personally like Perixx because it offers superb build quality, ergonomics, and practicality at a price that is around half the price of other gaming mouses. However, if you prefer a lot of buttons to play with and program, get the Corsair M95. The M95 is a palm-grip style mouse designed for MMO's and it also comes with 15 programmable buttons. Lastly, the M60 is the FPS variant of the M95 mouse. It has a reduced number of buttons and a smaller size designed for a palm grip, in exchange, you get a precision aiming button.

The Logitech G500s is a replacement for the Logitech G500. Not yet widely available but seems to fit the bill for what you're looking for. A few bucks cheaper than the 700s.

Looks like the Logitech G600 has 12 buttons on the side for your thumb, but you have to sacrifice the wireless cabability.

G600 is made for MMOs, I have been told repeatedly that is sub optimal for FPS gaming due to how your thumb will bump up against the side keys repeatedly.

Did see the Corsair M95 being compared to the G700s in one review and while it looks somewhat along the lines of what I want, didn't look quite as good and the review rated it under the G700s, with one of the biggest things for me is that many of the buttons are hard to reach etc.

Hadn't looked at the G500 I must say, but the biggest problem for me with it looks to be the lack of buttons :(

Gaming isn't my main concern here as tbh, I spend most of my time modelling and stuff which is why my current mouse is designed for MMOs too but got it somewhat due to the amount of buttons. But that said, that type of mouse with lots of tiny buttons on the side doesn't really appeal to me I must say as each individual button is a little too hard to find and with also a pretty large thumb lots of tiny buttons right next to each other is going to be hard to press one individually when they are all clumped up like that :p

You could go all out and buy the 3Dconnexion : SpaceNavigator , and a proper fps mouse. That 3d mouse would pay for itself I think, with the amount of time saved while modelling.

I already own a SpacePilot, have done for years now:

But its function buttons are a bit out of reach is the main problem with it, although its view buttons and a few others are really good, and ofc, its viewing options are invaluable.

Although have considered upgrading to the newer SpaceMouse Pro which looks to have a much better ergonomic design and easier to reach function buttons but these things cost a hell of a lot and until my SpacePilot dies, I'm going to stick with it as its brilliant other than that tiny little thing :p
And it also only has 4 open buttons which you would want to program.
Image

But its also why I need extra buttons more so on the mouse, as with my left hand being pretty much constantly on the spacepilot, you really don't want to take it off constantly to press things on the k/b and with my current mouse now loosing its MMB, its time to replace it w/e :p

EDIT: is there anything wrong with the G700s that your not mentioning or is it just that its just very expensive?

I just mentioned the 500s as alternative because of the price tag on the 700s.

Also, I have been using the Logitech MX5XX series , specifically the MX518 for, um at least 11 years, and the G500 and G500S ar the exact replacement.

I am now going to geek out on you,
this link is the best available in the world for finding a gaming mouse:
Gaming Sensor List

TL;DR Some mouse sensors use "angle snapping" to smooth movement in situations like rapid FPS aiming. The MX518 does not have this. An FPS mouse can not call itself a top quality mouse if it has this "feature", the link above is a list of all known mice that either do not have the snapping, and the exact sensor they use, some better than others. Some can have the snapping disabled through firmware.

Cool ye cheers, that's what I thought was just checking :)
There is a 30 squid price difference with the only real difference being its wireless and has 3 or so more buttons but think it might be worth it :p

Interesting, but couldn't tell by that page if the G700s has it on or not?

As I said above, not looking for a stack load of tiny buttons on the side like the Razer Imperator and the others don't have many buttons, with ones with more than just the normal back and forwards buttons, have them on the right hand side of the mouse which I struggle to use.

To talk of Logitech.

I've had two G9x mice and each has needed replacement at about 1 year, first was wire going into the mouse present is a side button that doesn't work anymore.

Obviously makes me doubtful of Logitech quality, however nice to use.

Ye, build quality use to be one of my biggest concerns with Logitech in the past but my 3DConnection (which is a sub company of Logitech) SpacePilot has lasted god knows how many years now with nothing going wrong with it so far, and the G700s comes with a "3-year Limited hardware warranty" so I'm willing to take the plunge seeing as I seem to be replacing my mouse every year any ways currently with w/e I go for.

ive had a g9x for 5 years now, and it works perfectly, i dont know what you did with your mouse, no wear on any of the buttons apart from the scroll wheels hard gear softening up.

the problems with the g9x are, its kind of small if you hold your mouse with your entire palm, and one of the grips doesnt fit too well so it has a bit of play when you move it, although you can easily fix it, but you shouldnt need to with the price, and my middle mouse button is still too hard to press, other people dont seem to have this problem.

Though logitech support is good and theyll replace your mouse without much trouble.
