PR Launcher not setting up Profiles properly/Game crash on startup

Post by TheRoko121 »

There's a solution down, fellas.

I've recently upgraded my PC and installed Windows 10.
Then I went ahead and installed PR Standalone, started up the launcher and it asked me if I want to retrieve my old account.
Of course, I decided I would (I have an account on the new version, by the way, so that's not the issue), and entered my credentials. My account name showed up, i selected it and pressed retrieve once again. Nothing happened.

Image

All I can do then is quit the first launch setup wizard.
(I've later tried removing the Documents\ProjectReality folder completely, reinstalling and retrieving via username, but then it just throws an unhandled exception)
I closed the wizard, restarted the launcher and opened my video settings (it's the first thing I do with any game).

Image

The display mode box was red and had no resolution in it, and the game wouldn't run because of an "unsupported display mode". But every time I try changing it (and any of the other settings except Mumble shortcuts), they just reset. Upon retrieving the account, the launcher didn't create any other files (Video.con, etc.) except for Profile.con.
So I tried using the "Reset all profiles" option to create them, but it just gave me an unhandled exception error.

Image

At first I thought this may be because Microsoft, in their infinite wisd... no, retardation, decided to bless every 10 user with OneDrive, and change our default User folders to Users\Username\OneDrive\Documents instead of Users\Username\Documents. So I opened OneDrive options, set them to "Save to this PC only", and then disabled OneDrive completely.
I fresh installed PR, and the same thing happened.
I even tried simply copying the .con files from the Default folder, but then PR would run and say "Failed linking to game process". Upon inspecting the log file, I realized it wasn't finding Controls.con, so I copied that too from the mods\pr\settings folder. Then the game ran, passed the intro, went black and shut down.

I've also tried all the things above + running as administrator, and various compatibility modes.

My rig (I don't think the problem lies here, honestly):

i5-4590
Gigabyte H97M-D3H
2x Radeon HD 6950 2GB in Crossfire (16x and 4x, I know, techheads, spare me the lecture)
8GB RAM

Here's the log file from the first (unhandled exception) error:

No ideas at all? Anyone on the support team see this yet?
Should I just wait for a patch?

We've seen a few people with this problem, but there are many many players running ok with w10 (I am for one) go and check the various other threads and see if anyone else has found a solution.

I would suggest you manually reload C++ DirectX and .net to be sure as I needed one after a new build with 10, iirc it was direct x

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks for the reply. It's easier even if I get a response in the vein of "can't help you mate" than nothing.
In the meantime I've redownloaded the PR ISO thinking my file might be corrupt, and after installing it (this time to the C drive), it won't even launch. Basically the same problem as this guy. If I'm not mistaken, .net 4.0 ships with Windows 10, so I can't do much there.
I've also redownloaded BF2 hoping that the redists installed with it could help. I'll edit the post after restarting with the results. If it doesn't work, I'll try cheating it by copying the settings files from my BF2 installation, but I'm not keeping my hopes too high.

EDIT: I've made it work!
It took an Odysey to get there, though. I had to reinstall BF2, make a singleplayer profile there, and then copy all the files from Battlefield 2\Profiles\Default to ProjectReality\Profiles\Default. Then the Launcher started, but it refused to proceed retrieving my account completely again, so I just clicked Retrieve once, and closed it. Then i copied the files from Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001 to ProjectReality\Profiles\0001, except for Profile.con and mapList.con. Wasn't sure if mapList would interfere with PR, and Profile.con would change my profile in PR. Then I started up the launcher again, I could normally change all settings and play the game. Happy times. Thanks for trying to help anyway. I'll try to redirect anyone with similar problems to my solution, hopefully it helps them too.

For me it isn't a profile problem but instead when the game starts up it immediately crashes with a semi black screen. Then when i (as usual) crtl alt delete to close it down it says cleaning up resources. However, when i turn off fullscreen mode it starts up fine but then EVERY SINGLE DAMN button and key anywhere in the game is meesed up. So messed up then the game becomes just as hard to play as if it was still crashing on start up.

Can anyone help me to fix this problem on starting it up while keeping my fullscreen mode on?

I don't think I could be of much help; but you could try installing a retail copy of BF2 and the redistributable packages that come with it. You could try stuff like vc++, DirectX (though you said you already tried it), and .net 4.0 which PR requires to run. (Installers also contained in pr[...].iso\Dependencies, but in case of possible corruption it's better to try downloading them on their own). Except for that you could try checking the launcher log in Project Reality BF2\mods\pr\bin\ for any possible errors. Other than that, no idea, and someone on the dev/support team is probably smarter than me for it.

That I've been installing Games in a separate games folder (now I have one on C - SSD and less SSD vitals on D) for years, and anything else I put into utilities.

Hi guys, can anyone help me? Because one day I change the audio settings and the game start to crash everytime that I want to play. This is what the Log say

Code: Select all

Project Reality Log File
PRLauncher.exe started at: 2016-03-28T22:31:37

Warning: Error validating video settings: TerrainQuality: -1
Warning: 1352: Error while game running.
The game just close and appear a message with: "Clossing resources" or something like that. After that when I open the Laucher it say that I don't have profiles, but the Profile stay in C:\Users\----\Documents\ProjectReality. I don't have any idea of what to do. For more information please look at my post, please, if someone can help me I apreciate that. https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... ost2119757 Thanks!.
