PR with custom/overclocked refresh rate?

Post by Geronimo »

Hello everyone!

So I am currently deciding whether or not I should get a high refresh rate "gaming" monitor. To help me with my decision I overclocked my 60hz (Asus ve278h) monitor to 74hz. While this is certainly not a huge bump, the difference is still very noticeable, especially when moving the cursor around in Windows.

However, PR doesn't like my ghetto monitor and crashes with this error: (60hz works fine)

Enabling/disabling v-sync and/or fullscreen doesn't help either.

The only workaround so far (besides running the game again at 60hz) is to run it at 1280x1024@75hz because that's an "official" resolution from the monitor.

I also used the search function and found out, that PR only runs on the native refresh rate of the monitor. However, most of the threads I found were from 2011 and older so I was hoping that someone found a solution to this problem in the meantime. Any help is gladly appreciated!

Thanks!

Why bother with 74fps when you can play PR with 60fps (w/o v-sync) error free?

What a stupid trend these days. Overclocking monitors...we used to laugh to people asking this, now its normal, and there are even articles on a lot of sites about it...sigh

Simply dont do it. There is no difference between 60 and 74 FPS, that your eye or any human eye can see. I also reccomend to most people to use Vsync to cap fps to 60 so the game woud not sttuter out of sudden frame drops in certain situations. In PR it is very obvious in large city maps or 100p servers.

So no benefits, with risk of damaging a monitor. NO.

PR does not run at 60Hz only, but is true that it will run on native refresh rate of the monitor. The game is reading your system setup and gives possible resolutions at options menu. If you want to run at custom resolution you have to manually add that in the system, so the game can use it, or try to use command line parameters such as:

Code: Select all

+menu 1 +widescreen 1 +restart +szx 1920 +szy 1080
but I have no idea how to add custom refresh rate here. Perhaps manually editing Video.con file in Profiles in Documents > ProjectReality>Profiles>Default or 0001?

I can add custom resolution and refresh rate in AMD CCC, not sure how to do that in Nvidia CP.

Edit:

Found something so try it:

Instructions:

1) Open your Nvidia Control Panel
- (on the left) click Manage Custom Resolutions
- then (on the right) click Create button

2) you should be in "Custom Resolutions" window
- click on Advanced button to see advanced options
- for "GDI Refresh Rate", type 74 (which means 74Hz)
- (at the bottom) for "Scaling Type", choose Display (none)
- now click the Test button (click OK/Yes on the windows that pop-up)
- now click OK button

3) Now Windows should be able to recognize the Refresh Rate for 74Hz... it should be chosen for you already
- if it is not chosen, just open Display Properties > Settings tab > Advanced button
- under Monitor tab > select 74Hz for Screen Refresh Rate.
If after adding this game still refuses to run @74Hz, go for gaming monitor.

Can't help with the problem, but I can add that PR can run at 144 fps. Sadly I have to use game.lockfps 999 in the console every time to get over 100 fps.

My ASUS VG278H monitor does 120 hz. I can probably type "game.lockfps 120" in my sleep now.
