Occasional freezing, CTDs on v1.6.5.2

Post by Randy_Bobandy »

Hey all,

Have had a good time playing Project Reality so far, although I seem to be experiencing a few issues with the game, mainly some occasional freezes and crashes. The freezes are usually accompanied with a black screen for a second or two until the game unfreezes itself, although other times I have to ALT-TAB to unfreeze the game again (in these scenarios I do not see the flash of the black screen).

Crashes to desktop are fairly common as well, they usually occur after at least 30 min or so has elapsed -- sometimes they are accompanied with error boxes, sometimes not. I can't remember what exactly the dialogue boxes read, but I remember the keyword "memory", a 6 digit number, and the buttons "Continue and "Try Again". There was a third button as well; it may have been "Abort" although I cannot remember fully.

I do have a procdump file from my latest crash, can't attach it to my post but you can access it via the Google Drive link below:

Did some more Googling and I'm fairly certain now that that "memory" dialog box I was talking about was either something like this:

or maybe this:

Image

From my research this error seems to have something to do with a lack of memory, although I'm sure my 16gb of ram should be more than enough for PR. Will run MemTest86 to see if anything might be wrong with it though, I'll edit this post with my results once I'm finished.

EDIT: RAM passed the test with no errors. Could be a pagefile issue maybe? Looking through that spec list I've noticed it seems to be abnormally small, even though it's set to "System managed size" on my boot SSD ("Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" is not checked though) -- I'll try to increase the size manually (min of 8000mb, max of 10000mb) and see if that fixes anything.

Can you check how much memory the game uses in task manager?

Last night when I got in game, memory usage started around 2700MB -- think it may have went up to 3100 or 3200MB at the end of my session. Did not experience any freezes/crashes that time, however, this was my first gameplay session with the increased pagefile.

PR is 32bit, it can't use more than 3.6GB. Something is memory leaking

I haven't seen anyone with these issues, do you have any unusual drivers? Do a clean install of that.
Do you use any non-microsoft antivirus or bitdefender? Get rid of it.

Hm ok then. The only driver I've installed manually is my AMD graphics card driver, I can run a clean install on that. Everything else was installed automatically during the initial Windows setup.

I do have Malwarebytes installed but it does not run in the background so I don't think it would be an issue, the built-in Windows Defender is the only active AV on my system.

Not really. That **** injects itself to the operating system, you can't see that its running

Okay then, I've uninstalled Malwarebytes. Going to remove my graphics driver through DDU and install the latest WHQL-certified one (Adrenalin 2020 Edition 21.3.1); I've also updated PR to v1.6.6.0. I'll play some more later on and I'll let you know whether or not that memory leak pops up again.
