No EU server is a tragedy

Post by Tommygun »

As per title. Although, I appreciate costs and ball ache but its kinda sad there are no EU servers up any more or rarely. I saw an Irish one briefly. What are minimum bandwidth requirements to host? I imagine a lot of peoples home connections are way better than old school T1s when this game came out.

You don't want to be running a public game server off a home connection. It's not wise for a number of reasons. 20Mbps up and down is more than enough to host a PR Server, but that's not the issue. Costs could be as little as $50 a month depending on the server hardware and choice of hosts, but it's not just a matter of "if you build it, they will come" either. Takes time, money, dedication, commitment, and a good team of Admins (not as easy to muster as you would assume). Worth it if you have the passion though extremely difficult given the current population of PR, but not impossible.

Lack of MONEY for proper DDOS protection is the issue.

No offense intended at all, but based on your feedback and suggestions so far, IMHO, the game will never be what you want of it. PR is what it is, and will continue to develop in that vein.

Also, DDoS happens, and even when you have protection it can take a short time to kick in. No protection is 100%, script kiddies always learn new tricks as time moves on and protection lags behind as it tries to keep up with the tricks, it's just a fact of being a server host. You can always try to mitigate it as much as possible, some providers are better than others to be sure, but there will always be a very small percentage of downtime in a year due to asshats no matter where you host from.

PR once was the game I fell in love with a long time ago. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for better days.
