New GPU - laggy game

Post by oldf4g »

Hi,

I just have a new GPU (RTX 3080ti) and when I play PR, the game seems "laggy". I mean I have 100 fps but the game really doesn't seem fluid and the feeling is less than my old GTX 770.
It's not a CPU issue or so, I deleted the shadder cache, tried with low or high preset, with and without v-sync, etc., the problem is the same.

Anyone has an idea from where it comes ?

I thank you for your answer !

Seems odd, are you using any on screen display to show FPS and/or latency during gameplay?

Makes me wonder if it's a latency issue. There is a setting in Nvidia Control Panel which can limit the number of frames prepared by the CPU to be processed by the GPU, you could try setting this to "1", and also making sure the Power Management Mode is set to "Prefer Maximum Performance"

Making sure the monitor is set to it's default refresh rate, in case Windows did something stupid, and that you are not running into thermal throttling issues during gameplay (which could cause stuttering) by having a temperature monitor active could help identify any issue there.

Without knowing more about the gear you use and what is going on in the background, it's hard to help troubleshoot. Maybe post up system specs.

Hope this helps, but it's a long shot in the dark. Best wishes and good luck!

There is some issue if you have MSI afterburner (happened to a friend), if you have that installed. Uninstall it and see.

FTR, not consistently an issue - worth trying for troubleshooting - I use MSI afterburner and have no issues in PR, getting at 85-100FPS at all times, butter smooth as can be expected in PR.

Hey SemlerPDX, first of all, thank you a lot for your complete answer and proposition, it's much appreciated !

Even more because it resolved the problem ! I tried several times and with many changes in the configuration pannel of NVIDIA and it just works. Unfortunately I don't know exactly which changes resolved the issue, but the game is now finally fluid.

Once again, thanks for your help, the shoot hit perfectly the target!

Well, poking around in the dark is one way to do it. Glad you got it sorted!

The proper way to troubleshoot something like this is to change ONE thing, then test - this goes for in-game settings as well, not just for Project Reality but any game where you are troubleshooting performance and such. It may be a pain in the *** and take a lot of time, but it is worth it. Just as much as checking out additional info about what any one of those individual settings does. The knowledge lasts and it's worth it if PC gaming is your thang, and though some items change or evolve in time, the damn Nvidia Control Panel has pretty much the same design as it did a decade ago just with different options.

In future, before you update your Nvidia drivers (preferably with the recommended 'clean install' which wipes any previous settings), screenshot your various settings for reference (Snip & Sketch or Snipping Tool if you have Win10). That way you can get yourself back to where you were.

Yeah you are right with the way to do that. The thing is that changing one setup and then relaunch the game every time, takes quite much time. But this would be the best way to proceed for sure!

And as you said, I made a clean install of the new drivers and it reset all my previous settings. So now I'm warned! Once again thank you for your help and advice.
