Simple effective fix that will be greatly appreciated by all passengers of PR Trans flights. Include earplug muffle sound effect for all occupants of a helicopter.
Use the same deafen effect with Armored vehicles where it is difficult to hear ambient sounds. It is sometimes impossible for squad leaders and pilots to communicate due to the loud helicopter noise.
If it is possible to add individual muffle effects for different seats then add for Pilot,Co Pilot, Door gunner seats simulating select positions where occupants get ear protection and aircraft intercom capability.
*there already is muffling for pilot/co pilot but its pretty minimal could be tweaked for more of the crew/occupants

Re: Ear plugs/muffle effect for helicopter occupants
Generally you turn down your effects volume.
The problem with this is you can't hear anything in game. At 100% I can hear someone running about 50m away.
Personally, I usually minimize out to desktop and turn down PR volume and have Mumble with higher volume.
However, the flight time is usually pretty short, so sometimes I don't bother and just ask the others what was said when we land.

I like that idea, would be more immersive and useful.

wingwalker that's not something I am willing to do again. tried it once and couldn't hear my own foot steps. this will allow coordination within a helicopter at least between the co pilot, gunners and pilot. its not something that should be super difficult either sine other vehicles have that mechanic that drown out the out side noise.

That sounds quite good actually.

Re: Ear plugs/muffle effect for helicopter occupants
There exists a setting for this (listenerObstruction) that is used on tanks etc already to block out outside sounds. However this setting seems to do little to nothing to engine sounds created by own vehicle.

I use a slightly tuned version of this. Works great.
PR Noise-Problem Solution - Project Reality Forums (realitymod.com)
With AutoHotKey macros for adjusting volume of two apps (Mumble and PR) independed of each other, and another set of key binds for adjusting Mumble volume alone, I can select best volume profile for each situation. Loud helicopter or vehichle nearby? No problem, I just hit Win+2 or Win+3, depending on its annoyance level, and I can hear my thoughts again.

Re: Ear plugs/muffle effect for helicopter occupants
You do know mumble can be on 200% volume right? Although the ability to hear others may vary based on their microphone but on average putting mumble on 200% will allow you to hear the copilot pretty fine as long as no one else is talking and you are not moving (If you have high ping there's a delay on the position update in mumble hence when moving people talking will sound like they are behind you even though they are right next to you.)

very simply. users should not need to "Adjust their meta hearing" in order to coordinate through an aircraft intercom

I don't believe that every passenger has access to intercom.Redamare wrote:very simply. users should not need to "Adjust their meta hearing" in order to coordinate through an aircraft intercom

Re: Ear plugs/muffle effect for helicopter occupants
not necessarily every passenger. pilot, co pilot, door gunners should not need to adjust mumble from the normal in order to hear each other if they are wearing headsets. Even a pilot should not need to adjust mumble in order to hear a screaming squad leader in the back to GO TO XYZ coord. Aviation headsets IRL are very noise cancelling. Perhaps even when players enter an aircraft the default position is in the rear and you would need to select pilot / co pilot F1 F2 buttons so its easier for squad leader to get the second position in the aircraft.
