Huge performance drop-off even with low graphic settings

Post by BigBigMonkeyMan »

I updated today (1/2/23) and the game is basically unplayable on Musa Qala. I logged out, lowered my graphics settings, was able to get back in the server and it was still basically unplayable. I have been playing for years on my laptop and even though the performance was never amazing, it always ran good enough to play any map and any vehicle and looked good. Musa Qala was maybe an issue when the map first dropped and hadn't been patched, but the last several times I played it I don't remember any issues.

Try the new patch, might bring back some frames with the advanced shader turned off.

I am fully aware that my PC isn't amazing, but I played PR with no problem for years with high terrain quality, texture quality, effects, dynamic shadows and 95 view distance. Sometimes I even run the Reshade graphics mod. I don't want to upgrade when the game hardly looks any different with the new update anyway. Something has to be done.

Just because you were not experiencing performance issues in a previous major release of PR is no guarantee that you will not in current or future major updates. While the game changes, so does your laptop and so too its ability to process these more intense workloads of gaming at standard operating temperatures you've come to expect. Keep an eye on your temperatures as that machine gets older, too - consider a teardown and deep clean if they are pushing the margins into the 80's and/or 90's (degrees C).

In addition to cleaning and maintaining your computer, and eventually upgrading to a gaming PC with space to breath rather than expecting circuits in a plastic coffin to perform well under load indefinitely, here are some other things you could try:

-Read Suchar's post on How to get more FPS in Project Reality (click here)

-Open the PR Launcher and click on Support - select the Utilities tab along the top and click the button to perform the Clear Shader Cache task at the top

-Open Windows Disk Cleanup - Check the box next to DirectX Shader Cache and then press OK

-Double-check your Power Management Mode - ensure you are in a High Performance plan and not a Power Saver plan
