The reason why there is such a gap between the two apertures is to implement realistic fields of vision as dictated by the optic type. have you thought/tried about having a blurred surrounding rather then just black? it represent the periferal [sp] vision being out of focus?

So about all we can do, is either have no blur, or use black and gradients.
