This is probably the worst place and time to point this out, but you might get better performance by using a new tree model that doesn't have green stuff from top to bottom, instead just having the top covered. Like this in order to get a forest that, on the inside, looks like this. Regular trees could be used on the edges, so it would still offer good cover from the outside.
Otherwise, it looks pretty cool.

If this works out, it would be fantastic for infantry play, however if you would do it like jerkzilla suggested, It would open the forest a bit, alowing for some kind of longer range battles inside it, obstructed by tree trunks. Sounds interesting, doesnt it?
