New meaning for AT

Airborne Tankbuster.
I was on the TG server in Jabal when I got H-AT as USMC and decided to have someone fly me in a blackhawk (in this case, CP20000) and I would AT from above. The first time I had successfully tried this in BF (always wanted to). Really fun, but not that accurate. And to CP, good flying!

the blackhawks are to heavy, to big for this kind of missions, use a littlebird instead plus there's alot of AA guns on that map " note to my self, theres no littlebird on jabal "

I've done this in a LB before, works pretty well if you can get straight overhead, but sadly enough, you're often really vulnerable
And you use up a whole LB for just one purpose, which the rest of the team won't appreciate, though you could try on the MEC chopter on that oilfields map maybe?

Hehe. Thanks TF6049.
We didnt "waste" an asset, we were about to cap the MEC main base and no one was using the blackhawks so we had some fun
The blackhawk is better for this than the LB because it resupplys ammo

Tried that also once and just got shot down by the Tank.
You need a veeery good pilot to do that and you haveo shoot perfectly two times or until you habĀ“ve reloaded at mainbase or somewhere else the tank is "up up and away" again.

This is reality mod. For some reason, I can't imagine this ever being attempted in the history of mankind in reality. Plz dun do it.

well, this is similar: In Veitnam,
Some Hueys were fitted with wooden chutes outside the doors to allow flight crew to drop mortar rounds on enemy positions, with aircrew simply yanking the bottom doors of the chutes open with wires to drop the loads. This "Mortar Aerial Delivery (MAD)" scheme was reportedly very effective in jungle fighting.
dont forget heli-TOW launchers, we dont have any of thous.

It's been done countless times by me and Stal on Basrah using the Merlin. Oh, but transport is flying death.... for the enemy

We did it on OGT in the tournament.... mobile arty!

Ummmm you forget one the most important facets of the H-AT.
The tone lock.
If you lock up a tank from a helo, he is freaking out trying to find the H=At gunner on a horizon and is not paying attention to the ground.
Ergo, cognito ....BOOM!

Don't you mean cogito? And that actually is a good trick to make them freak out

I've done it a few times - from the LB is best, as you're safe from hostile SAMs, if not AAA.
You need a good pilot and voice coms- trick is to fly really nice and high so your'e above coax/mounted MG aimpoint, and then get the pilot to level off and hover briefly while you let loose.
As soon as you've fired, start moving off again and let the pilot know when you're reloaded. Two shots then RTB for resupplies - it works well.
For those who say it's probably never been done IRL, I put it to you that no-where is humankind as ingenious and willing to innovate as in warfare. Sure, it's a gamey, low-down tactic and one that'll probably make you deeply unpopular. It's also a fairly intensive used of resources- a chopper and HAT (or even HAT and LAT together) is a lot to devote to aerial tank-busting- but hell, it's rarely used, hardly a massive problem on the servers and immensely good fun!

The Merlin works just as well. The troops aren't exposed to AAA fire as much and the helicopter is very maneuverable. The Merlin can also take about 3 RPG hits. Reminds me of an excellent time on Basrah when I was hit by an RPG, saw him, flew over to him and hovered by him. Tsk.

Something fun we did while waiting for everyone to get to practice (or filming, forgot which) in 0.5 Basrah was to have a spec ops on the side of a chopper and have a Humvee driver around randomly inside the airport, get low enough with the LB, drop a slam in the Humvee's flat bed and fly away. Sort of the same idea and lots of fun if you're with friends in a non-pub or empty server.

Heh, done that too
Had the Merlin fly around and then when someone spotted an ammo cache, lower the chopper, chuck a SLAM or two on it. Damn I love creativity. Although I can't see many spec-ops tossing out a few explosive devices from helicopters in Iraq

Probably because they're too busy strapping each other to Cobras and Apaches
Always remember kids, nothing is weirder than reality!

Hehehe, I'm pretty sure this is specifically stated as against TG rules.
Gyberg wrote:We did it on OGT in the tournament.... mobile arty!
And I'm also pretty sure that *that* was against tourney rules for that map...

Frankly, I can't see why anyone - Tourny, Pub server or Clan server - should see the need to impose bogus rules like that.
If someone shoots at you, you shoot back.
If someone shoots a tank at you, you either get in your own tank or grab the HAT.
If someone shoots a jet at you, you either get in a jet or grab the AAV or AA kit.
So why is it when people are confronted with new and different tactics, they don't come up with a decent solution?
I mean, if there's a Merlin with two HAT and some Spec Ops buzzing around killing Insurgency vehicles and dropping SLAMS onto ammo caches, it seems to be that the logical response is as follows:
1. Station an AA trooper on a high rooftop with a source of ammo nearby
2. Station Tacticals in a loose formation in the surrounding area
3. Wait for the Merlin to fly overhead and then wrack up a whole bunch of kills for 5 minutes co-ordinated work.
Likewise with Littlebirds/Other small Helos manned with HAT/LAT kits - all it takes is a few well-placed machineguns and you've got them bang to rights.
It's the same mentality you see on Kashan- players moaning "This map sucks with Jets/Choppers (delete as inappropriate) whilst their teams AA kits are still safely with the Quartermaster and both Anti-Air vehicles are parked back at main base.
*Every* tactic in the game you can think of, there's a decent counter for. If the other side is loading 6 guys into a transport chopper and using it as a gunship, all power to 'em! It just proves the other side aren't working together as a team- because with a little work and some co-ordination, they'd have the buggers down within 10 minutes. Kill the chopper and its crew two or three times, they'll stop doing it.
