eee = XP || Linux

Post by hx.bjoffe »

Hi,

Any of you n3rds familiar with linux? Or netbooks?
I got an eee 11" travel companion. It is this i'm writing on now. I haven't yet upgradet to 2gb mem, but i soon will. It got an atom 1,33ghz cpu.
It came with XP stock, and i'm mostly happy with it. However, it can't decode heavily compressed video nor youtube/internet television.
So, i decided to try installing linux as a dual OS. I haven't played around with linux in atleast 10-12 years. But I heard good things about Ubuntu, so i went with 'ubuntu netbook remix.' An official modified Ubuntu 9.10. A distro specially designed for intel atoms, appearantly.

I've heard linux is weak on java/flash. But still, XP outclasses this experiment in every way. Much more drain on battery, weaker wifi-signal, and in general lot less efficient on CPU. Video is out of the question, tried several players eg. VLC and Mplayer. Startup takes much longer, programs respond slower, even scrolling through text lags. Tried xsfc in addition to gnome, no appearant difference.

This goes totally again the linux myth i've grown up with. What can i be doing wrong?
I wasn't expecting all that much more power from my little computer, but this opposite reaction was the last thing i expected.
My distro is total bloat? I need total different set of drivers or something of the like?

Got experiences? Please share.

I have a free license of Win7 lying around, think i'll try installing this sometime over easter. I heard mixed reports on xp vs. 7 on netbooks, better find out on my own.

I have only just started experimenting with the netbook flavour of Ubuntu, so the thread makes interesting reading. I know that MS are planning a netbook edition of Windows 7 before too long.

You could look into Android development, or one of the other flavours of linux. XP and 2GB of ram seems like your best option for your requirements as you stated.

I want to try running PR on the EeePC 1225B.

Specs:
1.65GHz AMD E-450 APU with Radeon 6320 Graphics
4 Gigabytes of Ram
Win 7 64-Bit

The thing that will suck is the processor, so medium would be the highest.
So far will try the Battlefield 2 Demo.
