Yeah absolutely and it is only a temporary fix. My point however is that quality and detail should not be sacrificed for massive view distances just for the sake of it, there needs to be an appreciable benefit to increasing them and as stated I find the view distance in 0917 perfectly acceptable.ChizNizzle wrote:But the reduction of the viewdiestance is moreorless avoiding to solve the problem. It must be something in the models/lods/fields thats causing all this.

TBH, I think that the current view distances are fine for infantyr and maybe o-k for some lighter vehicles, but tank warfare to some degree and all air assets to a large degree suffer immensely from their restrictions.Jigsaw wrote:Yeah absolutely and it is only a temporary fix. I do however believe that an optimization in LODs at further levels may help on both up close and far out detail and performance. Seeing as the majority of the objects being rendered would be out at 1 km from you rather than within 25 meters of you, there would be a MUCH LARGER increase in performance if a new super-low LOD (think of air sims where the difference isn't distinguishable at distance) makes the polygon count of say 100 static objects at 1km from you go from 500 to 50 polygons than if the LOD0 goes from 12000 to 10000 and only affects 10 statics.

Ye, many objects still need decent LODs and it is one of the many factors that is causing performance issues, but not the only factor.McLuv wrote:I do however believe that an optimization in LODs at further levels may help on both up close and far out detail and performance. Many objects do not have a final lod like I make them, being as simple as possible, as you can read more about here if your interested: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f388-p ... post978588
Most of the objects that have this problem are vBF2 objects that are not simple or really possible to fix, epically statics, but also some PR object's LODs could be optimized a lot too but this all takes a lot of time to go though every object and make decent lods and there isn't much motivation for anyone to go though loads of models and cleaning them up. Trust me I do it all the time and I'm one of the few devs who dose this and there is little motivation in doing it other than knowing that the outcome will be better where I would be much happier working on a brand new model. We dont get paid for this job so its going to take a lot of time to clean up all the old stuff and vBF2 stuff and most of it will most likley not get cleaned up any time soon in that department.
As for the view distance decrease for .91 being "temporary", well the only maps that had there VD decreased where new maps that where not fully tested in there performance overhead and really its just normal. Muttrah had a 800m VD in its development but I lowered it to its current 700m VD before it was released after extensive testing to found that to be the magic number for everyone to run it smoothly and trust me even a few of the testers complained at the time but its all fine now since everyone can run it smooth. The only difference here is you guys got to see what it was like before, where with Muttrah and many other maps you didn't.
If at a later date we can increase the VDs on all the maps we will but I wouldn't count on it.

That's not really a soultion since one of the problems is too many objects being drawn, its easier for the engine in most cases to draw one big object than lots of little objects. One reason why my Afghan kit I made didn't go down too well in performance we found.
It isn't that hard adding a new LOD onto an object, the hard bit is making all these LODs that need to be made and fixing up all the little problems at the same time with lots of other little things ontop of it. Adding a LOD only becomes a real issue when it comes to static objects since then you need to deal with lightmaps.
