Charisma means you can convince of your opinions/arguments. Thus, if you are a charismatic , you can convince people to follow your lead. Even if you don't know much about tactics or micromanagement, you will need to convince people to follow your orders as a squadleader first and foremost, as that is what leading is all about. However, if you know your tactics and are good at micromanagement but can't convince people to follow your plans accordingly, you're not leading at all.dtacs wrote:Charisma means nothing when the squad leader can't make a decision nor a good one at that. Even if I was the funniest dude in the world I wouldn't squad lead simply because I don't like wasting other peoples time when I don't need to.
By far the most important skill is the ability to micromanage. This means telling holding squad members hands when they need, calling in CAS and watching friendly squads movements on the map; all at the same time.
Down from looking in a certain direction to planning the fight from start to finish.
Most people tend to disagree with the premise that you have to micromanage your squad, but in PR noone can be trusted when they say 'I know what I'm doing.

Re: Leader Skill
I'd actually argue you that being charismatic IS important but it's NOT leading. It is making others follow you, but if you want to be a LEADER you must make them want to follow you because of what you do, not what you look like (which is what Charisma is about).Adriaan wrote:Charisma means you can convince of your opinions/arguments. Through PHYSICAL aspects. The word you're looking for is not Charismatic, is rather "arguement king", "eloquent"...Adriaan wrote:Charisma means you can convince of your opinions/arguments.

Re: Leader Skill
While true, psychologically speaking, this doesn't really apply to PR; like I mentioned before, players in PR will tend to join a squad and follow orders for better or for worse, perhaps giving SL suggestions and helping to guide decision making in some cases, but I seldom if ever see a SL in PR get abandoned by his squad for lacking charisma; I see most players stay in a squad with a brash, abrasive, or even sociopath squad leader as long as they are functioning effectively and winning.Adriaan wrote:Thus, if you are a charismatic , you can convince people to follow your lead... if you know your tactics and are good at micromanagement but can't convince people to follow your plans accordingly, you're not leading at all.
Dtacs, I mean it purely as a compliment when I suggest that you are one of these kind of leaders
![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
In reality, a military unit spends a lot of time together, in person, under extreme stress, with plenty to lose. Soldiers in close proximity to each other all the time living in this particular structure develop relationships very differently from the way PR players do online, and charisma is certainly something leaders need to survive in this sort of environment. In PR, (usually) you have six strangers who don't really know each other and are sitting in homes that are sometimes countries apart, comfortable and without much on the line, not under the extreme stress of actual military life and operations. This makes charisma in PR more of a luxury than a necessity in my view. We can live without it, and no one is going to threaten any kind of consequential mutiny against you.
So, I say, as long as your getting things done and being an effective squad, most people will stick with you regardless of whether or not you are a masculine, paternal, inspirational type, or annoying and whiny and offer too much criticism. Although I still make it a point to portray the qualities of a leader, just for the sake of fulfilling people's expectations

A decision is better then no decision at all. SL needs to be confident in himself and his actions, this will reflect in his squad members and together they will be able to achieve incredible results.

No offense to all of you, but charisma is something i hate now.
Its like a black hole you can supposedly put all other attributes and skills in, i mean for me charismatic is just being good at getting people to follow you. You have an aura. People just follow you cause your awesome.
Thats not good enough, id rather have a really good tactical officer under me, who i knew would kick the enemies ***, than someone who would just gather tons of people and get killed. Even start some e-drama. Thats what i experience when i think about it.
But what i find interesting, what leadership skills are connected to Social intelligence qoutation, and what skills are connected to Intelligence qoutation.

Well I've found when I don't put in any personality at all you still get the same result as if you did.Adriaan wrote:Charisma means you can convince of your opinions/arguments. Honestly people look into 'having a good game' at the same time too much. I play to win, and people who join my squad are there for the same thing. A majority-emotionless, well oiled machine that steamrolls the game.
Looking into this stuff is just like that essay MiamiHeat wrote on 'transformational leadership'. Its not nessecary, you either can or can't lead. Taking other peoples strategies and using them isn't you leading at all.

Re: Leader Skill
There are many better SLs than I, so I can only offer the basics.
Strategy. Have a plan and implement it clearly for your SMs to see. It proves that you know what you are doing. Gives them confidence.
Tactical. Go where you should. A having a fun squad doing a cool little niche project is attractive, but if it isn't helping the team with the objectives, the rest of the team will suffer. Especially if you have a large portion of the team in your squad, or are using important assets.
Personality. I've seen very good SLs, both charismatic and almost catatonic. It doesn't matter as long as your SMs are busy and (very important) successful.
Self control. Getting too involved with a particular attack or enemy squad can wreak havoc on your success. If you feel you are losing control, step out of SL and go SM, but find a capable replacement first.
SM control. They are the tools which you must use to wage war. Your job is to shape them into a functional team asset. If they fail, replace them.
Note. If you have a fireteam that gets separated from you and the others for extended periods of time, have them make a temporary squad. Sometimes they are doing an efficient job at their location and calling them away is unnecessary. It also reduces the risk of confusing crosstalk.
A hearing ear. The ability to filter the wash of ideas you get from SMs. Some are very good, others are a waste of time.

When to flank, when to rush, when to dig in, when to run away. Imma call it Tactical AwarenessIts what separates the good from the great.

Bam. I totally agree with you. I find Charisma somewhat a "trickery" rather than leading. It sure attracts people to you, but then people follow you blindly because of your "awesomeness". Some days ago I played with a SL which was famous and all and I thought he would be good fun. Luckily my game CTD'd. I didn't log back in. It wasn't fun. A mistake happened and he started complaining (not to us but just in general) instead of, since this is a game and it was an actually funny thing, LOL'ing.Wicca wrote:No offense to all of you, but charisma is something i hate now.

I'm not saying one should LOL at a mistake, but rather adapt than complain.
About the Charisma in this story, I followed him because he was famous. But now I know, I'd rather follow someone who I know is a good player, who I've played before with and people I see at the forums.

I'm gonna hop in this old thread with a new post and point and say
A MIC
Nothing worse than a Squad Leader without a mic. Not sure if that's a skill, but it's sure as hell important.

Humility - There is nothing worse than a squad leader who is on a power trip. Yes Mr.Squad leader you are in charge but instead of micro managing your squad to the point where they no longer have any freedom. You should realize that your squad is a finely tuned killing machine of death and all you have to do is make sure it is pointed in the right direction.
What I mean by that is everyone from ARs to Medics (should)know their role. Let them fulfill it.
Be a leader not a dictator.

Sometimes, pointing it to the right direction requires micromanagement?

Ok. If you are lucky you have good squad members.

I like that! How do you difer this in PR?

I'm all for a SL that can micromanage. I'm talking about is when someone over does it. Squad mates are assets that should give feedback not silent pawns to be places.goguapsy wrote:Sometimes, pointing it to the right direction requires micromanagement?
True. I was assuming the squad was up to snuff.goguapsy wrote:Ok. If you are lucky you have good squad members.

No.goguapsy wrote:You mean should be given feedback you mean?
In my opinion a good SL should take into account(to a point)the ideas and opinions of his squad.
For example. You are SL and you want to move to a position, but your AR says there are 2 full squads set up to defend and it would not be a good idea to assault from your current location. The SL should take that into account instead of getting the whole "I'm SL you do as I say" mentality.

My favourite skill is also humility. But its not for those reasons.
I always play PR, for the others, and in essence, if they are having fun so am i. So i drive myself very hard to give the people under me a good experience, or else they might not have a good time.
Its just my way of thinking really.

I may have omitted this in my other posts, but I totally concur. If I'm getting feedback from the squad that they are having fun and feel good about what they're doing, I feel my job is done, regardless of how our team is doing on the battlefield.Wicca wrote:My favourite skill is also humility.
