Lag Spikes.

Post by Tiger1 »

OK,

I have a vaio top of the line laptop. In the past I have never had any lag in any game.

Recently I started getting lagspikes in PR, which proved to also be lagspikes in all other games.

Then I formatted my laptop to see if that was the problem. - it wasnt. Problem still persisted.

Next I took the laptop to the shop and get it dusted out - this still hasnt fixed the problem.

Next I also made sure all graphics drivers had been installed according to vaio website. - this still also hasnt fixed the problem.

HOW CAN I FIX THIS PROBLEM? I want to be able to fight / play in games without these damn lag spikes.

Any computer tech individual who knows how to deal with this problem?

Please respond to this request for assistence.

hi Andersson,

lag spikes usually refer to network and internet latency issues.
So my first question after reading your post is it sounds like you have been trying to fix a fragmented hard drive and graphics card overheating problem.

Are you experiencing lag spikes or something different, such as graphics or memory related slowdowns?

You'll have to post your OS and hardware specs to be able to help you out.

Give us the model number of your laptop and any upgrades you've done.
which OS, win vista, 7, 8 ,... 32 or 64 bit,... Home Premium, Pro, etc.

Funny solution to FPS problems the other day, since you're on a laptop, it's probably worth checking the easy stuff first ;)

We need better info,
Please just tell us the manufacturer and the model number, we can look it up if you don't have the specs handy.
Which i7 model?
which GPU model?

make sure as Psyrus mentioned, you switch your power settings to Gaming Mode, or Full Power mode. Energy Saver mode turns off Turbo in i7 CPUs, especially a problem with all i7 CPU prior to the Ivy Bridge (i7-3XXXm) models.

You could try turning off Intel? Turbo Boost Technology in your BIOS.

And/Or you can try this:

Try ThrottleStop, which has an option to turn off Turbo boost, thereby running your CPU at a constant 2.0/2.2 GHz (for the 2630 and 2670 respectively). However putting the CPU in a permanent overclocked state is not possible with throttlestop

Downloads

reference guides in this link for using throttlestop:
ThrottleStop - Performance Adjustment Tool for Core 2 / Core i CPUs

When using ThrottleStop, it is strongly recommended to monitor power consumption at the wall with a Kill-a-Watt meter or similar device and make sure that you don?t exceed the power capabilities of your power adapter. Use of ThrottleStop to bypass these throttling schemes is at your own risk and can result in permanent damage to your power adapter or computer or both which may not be covered by your warranty.

You can disable BD PROCHOT using ThrottleStop.

You need to google about how to turn off BD PROCHOT, I can't be held responsible for this, ... it's a complicated thermal throttling system that communicates thermal temps between GPU and CPU to make sure your laptop does not melt.

You know what, it's probably best before he starts disabling core/peripheral CPU functions, that we do some decent testing.

To 'eliminate' your hardware as the potential cause, please download the following monitoring software:

CPU-Z
GPU-Z
Coretemp

Open up PR in a 1280x720 window (ask if you don't know how to do this), and put the monitoring software on the right end of the screen. Load into a map and check your temperatures & frequencies. Post a screenshot if possible, especially if you notice the graphs/frequencies dip while you experience the 'lag'.

Here's an example with just GPU-Z

Ok Psyrus please explain to me how I put PR in 1280 x 720 mode. Ive got it all installed and just need to figure out how to get it down to the small screen.

Change the szx value to 1280 and the szy value to 720 :)

In my 'target' it only says this : "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe"

I just added it manually to see if it will work.

EDIT : It worked standby for results.

These are the results while running the game at the same time in the screen size you did above aswell.

So during that session, did you have many 'laggy' instances? Did they coincide with the dips in your GPU load graph?

Yes, also for other games. Same thing. A lot of lag.

I just looked up your laptop. It seems like you have a GT540M as your GPU on the laptop. Can you confirm that's the case (GPU-Z should tell you).

I just had a brainwave - The intel sandy & ivybridge have the onboard HD3000&HD4000 GPU. I suspect what might be happening is that it's processing on the CPU rather than your dedicated GPU, which uses shared memory, which for high resolution/AA settings would cause memory bottlenecks, thus resulting in the sporadic 'lag spikes' as you describe.

It happens with my HD3000 on this craptop dell. I'm not really sure how to test/disable/confirm this theory though... I'll have to do some reading I guess.
